Celebrity Co-star Couples Who Didn’t Last Beyond The Set
They may have been madly in love with each other at one point enough to work together, but these celebrity co-star couples just couldn’t remain a couple once things wrapped on set.
Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter
Michael C. Hall was fresh out of a marriage to his Broadway musical co-star when he began starring in Showtime’s award winning show “Dexter” in 2006. Co-star Jennifer Carpenter started out playing Morgan’s adopted sister on the show but winded up eloping with him in real life. The couple got hitched after secretly dating for a year but the show would outlast the marriage. In 2010, the couple announced they were separated and divorced the following year. “Dexter” is currently airing the eighth and final season.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
Before there was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, there was Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. When the stars merged forces in 2002, the media went crazy over Bennifer. The couple met while filming the movie Gigli, which went on to bomb at the box office. Affleck even starred in Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” video when millions watched as he nonchalantly cradled her behind. Bennifer was set to tie the knot in September 2003 but the wedding was called off just hours before it took place place. Affleck has since found happiness with his wife Jennifer Garner while Lopez channels her inner cougar with much younger boyfriend Casper Smart.
Blake Lively and Penn Badgley
For almost three years, co-stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgley were an item. Too bad their hit show, “Gossip Girls,” only lasted for six seasons. The show began in 2007 and the couple started dating soon after that. They broke up in 2010 but remained professional on the set of the CW show until its run ended in 2012. Lively met her future husband Ryan Reynolds on the set of the 2010 action film “Green Lantern” and after he divorced wife Scarlett Johansson, they tied the knot.
Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake
Actress Cameron Diaz was able to snag one of the youngest and hottest bachelors off of the market for a while in the early 2000s. The There’s Something About Mary star dated former N’Sync member Justin Timberlake for several years before their tumultuous breakup in 2006. There was nothing but positive vibes and laughter in the air when the duo was paired off in the 2011 comedy film Bad Teacher. Now a married man, Timberlake reunited with the band for a brief performance at the 2013 MTV VMAs.
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson met and fell in love on the set of the movie Twilight back in 2008. Fans were just as invested in the couple’s relationship as they were the franchise that made them famous. Die-hard fans were heartbroken when Stewart was caught having an affair with much older director Rupert Sanders during the summer of 2012. After a brief time apart the couple seemed to patch things up but Pattinson was spotted by photographers as he was moving out of the home he shared with Stewart this past May.
Eva Marcille and Lance Gross
Back when Lance Gross and Eva Marcille were still in a relationship, the couple went to work together on the set of Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne.” Gross was an original cast member on the show while his girlfriend appeared on a few episodes. Marcille and Gross were engaged when they split up in 2010. The “America’s Next Top Model” winner reprised her character Tracie later on in the series and has appeared on the show after their split. Marcille is currently dating singer Kevin McCall and has recently revealed she is carrying her first child.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
During the height of the High School Musical mania, Zac Efron broke the hearts of pre-teen and teenage girls everywhere when he started dating co-star Vanessa Hudgens. They were together for three years but due to grueling schedules, Efron and Hudgens had to call it quits. “Having an iPhone helped, but it’s not the same as face-to-face time,” Hudgens said of their breakup. Hudgens also briefly dated her Journey 2 co-star, Josh Hutcherson.
David Arquette and Courtney Cox
Funny man David Arquette met his future wife Courtney Cox on the set of the 1996 scary movie Scream. After a few years of dating, the couple tied the knot in1999. Five years later, they welcomed their only child, daughter Coco, but the union wouldn’t last. The couple split in 2010 but would still remain co-stars on the set of 2011’s Scream 4. Arquette filed for divorce in 2012 and the couple vows to remain friends for the sake of their daughter.
Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki
Johnny Galecki may play nerdy physicist Leonard Holfstader who’s in love with his next-door neighbor on the CBS’ sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” but in real life Galecki and the neighbor were an item. The former “Roseanne” star and actress Kaley Cuoco secretly dated for two years but it wasn’t until they broke up that “The Big Bang Theory” co-stars came clean about their secret relationship. The seventh season of the hit show will begin at the end of September.
Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray
Sophia Bush certainly doesn’t travel far to find love. The actress started dating her fellow “One Tree Hill” co-star Chad Michael Murray in 2003 and two years later they walked down the aisle in holy matrimony. But after just five months of wedded bliss, the couple announced their separation, although they would have to remain colleagues. Keeping his feelings in check, Murray watched as Bush hookrf up with another “One Tree Hill” co-star, Austin Nichols, in 2010. They broke up in 2012, the same year the show went off of the air.
Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal
No Doubt bandmates Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal dated each other and broke up before the group became famous but their seven-year relationship was the inspiration for their album Tragic Kingdom. Released in 1995, the album contained the hit song “Don’t Speak” and the group went on to sell more than 33 million albums worldwide. Stefani took a break from the group to pursue a solo career and a start a family. The group recently announced they are working on new material and expect to tour soon.
Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz
Tom Cruise certainly likes dating his fellow co-stars. On the set of the 1990 film Days of Thunder, Cruise met and fell in love with Nicole Kidman. Fresh out of his marriage to Kidman, a Tom Cruise on the rebound started dating fellow Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz in 2001. They would remain a couple for three years before calling it quits. Cruise set his sights on his third wife Katie Holmes who he, surprisingly, did not meet on a movie set. Holmes filed for a divorce seemingly out of the blue last summer and it was finalized two weeks later.
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
Ryan Phillippe met Reese Witherspoon at her 21st birthday party back in the 90’s. After tying the knot the young newlyweds would star in the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions together. Eight years and two children later, they couple headed to divorce court. After they split up, Phillippe had another child with ex-model girlfriend Alexis Knapp. Witherspoon made headlines earlier this year after getting arrested alongside her husband after one drunken night out in Atlanta.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
Meeting on the set of one of the most tragically romantic movies of its decade, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams started dating after the 2004 film The Notebook wrapped up. They would remain a couple for three years. Gosling spoke highly of his ex in an interview after their split. “God bless ‘The Notebook,'” he said. “It introduced me to one of the great loves of my life. But people do Rachel and me a disservice by assuming we were anything like the people in that movie. Rachel and my love story is a hell of a lot more romantic than that.”
