The Unfriendly Skies: Celebs Who’ve Been Kicked Off Airplanes
They may be known as the friendly skies but these celebs who’ve been kicked off airplanes found out the skies can be really unfriendly when you act a fool.
Soulja Boy has been making headlines as of late and not for his music. The “Crank That” rapper was booted off of an American Airlines plane earlier this month for his rude and disruptive behavior. After boarding the flight, Soulja Boy remained standing while watching the rest of the passengers sat down. A flight attendant asked Soulja Boy, real name DeAndre Cortez Way, to take his seat. That’s when he got disrespectful and was then kicked off. “It was a bad night and me and the flight staff didn’t see eye to eye,” the rapper later said in a statement. “In hindsight, I’m extremely sorry for all inconvenience caused to the passengers and employees of the airline.”
Naomi Campbell’s anger issues are legendary. When she’s not hitting people upside their heads with a Blackberry, the supermodel is getting kicked off of planes. In 2008, the long-legged beauty flew into a rage when she learned her bags didn’t make the same flight she was on. When she was politely asked to deplane, Campbell refused to go quietly. The police were called and had to drag her off after she allegedly kicked and spat at them.
Alec Baldwin has become known more for his shenanigans and scuffles with the media and public than his acting roles. One time, the “30 Rock” star was completely engrossed in a game of “Words with Friends” on his cell phone while waiting to take off on a flight from Los Angeles to New York — so much so that he didn’t hear the flight attendant order all electronics turned off and was called out. Baldwin gave a play by play of what went down on his twitter page before he was escorted off. The native New Yorker took a later flight home.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Jonathan Rhys Meyers had a little too much fun relaxing in the first-class lounge before his flight in 2010. The “Tudors” star was pounding the drinks back so much that by the time he got to the gate he was way too hone shall we say? Described as belligerent and disruptive, Meyers tried to board the plane but when flight attendants saw his condition, he was turned away. Meyers has since been banned from flying United Airlines.
Former child star Amanda Bynes has been on a public downward spiral for quite some time now. Earlier this year in May, Bynes tried to board a Los Angeles flight at Teterboro Airport n New Jersey. The problem was she didn’t have any valid I.D. on her. Bynes told the pilot to “google her” but needless to say she wasn’t able to get on the flight. Last month Bynes was hospitalized on a mental hold after she set her pants on fire on a stranger’s driveway. Her mother has been granted conservatorship over her daughter while Bynes remains hospitalized.
Billie Joe Armstrong
If you want to fly Southwest Airlines, you better make sure your pants aren’t sagging. Rocker Billie Joe Armstrong boarded a plane in 2011 with his pants hanging loosely around him when a flight attendant told him to pull them up. An eyewitness gave an account of what happened. “A flight attendant approaches him and says, ‘Pull your pants up,'” the witness said. “He says, ‘Don’t you have better thing to do than worry about that?’ and then the flight attendant says again, ‘Pull your pants up or you’re getting off the plane.'” The Green Day frontman was lead off of the plane.
When a flight attendant announces that all electronics need to be put away, they mean business. Actor Josh Duhamel found that out firsthand when he was on a flight from New York to Kentucky and refused to put his Blackberry away. The plane, which had already left the gate and was taxiing down the runway, had to be turned around so Duhamel could be escorted off. The former soap opera star later admitted that wasn’t his finest moment and promised to adhere to FAA regulations in the future.
Sometimes public displays of affection shouldn’t be so public. Actress Leisha Hailey was showing her girlfriend a little affection on a 2011 flight from Baltimore to St. Louis when a flight attendant told them other passengers were complaining about the outpouring of love. Furious that she and her girlfriend were kicked off the flight, the “L Word” star vowed to never fly Southwest Airlines again. The airline issued a statement concerning the incident and apologized to all of their customers.
We all know it is wrong to drink and drive but apparently it is ill advised to drink and fly as well. Country singer John Rich showed up at the airport ready to board a flight from Nashville to Las Vegas a little less than sober. The “Celebrity Apprentice” winner got into a scuffle with a passenger before the flight and once on board, flight attendants deemed Rich was too drunk to stay on the plane. He left without further incident and was given a refund.
Legend Whitney Houston has always had diva behavior. In 2011, the “I Will Always Love You” singer was almost kicked off of a flight for not wearing a seatbelt. Initially refusing to buckle up, a flight attendant warned Houston would be kicked off of the flight. In true diva fashion, someone else fastened Houston’s seatbelt for her and the plane proceeded to its destination.
When you have to go, you have to go. Gerard Depardieu was faced with a tough dilemma on board a Dublin flight in 2011. Needing to use the restroom but wanting to obey the “fasten seatbelts” sign, the French born actor tried to use a bottle to relieve himself but with his aim not being what it used to be, he spilled urine on the floor. Needless to say Depardieu was kicked off of the plane. He has since apologized for the incident.
Actress Brooke Mueller may not have a lot of credited roles under her belt but her bad girl Hollywood behavior is infamous. In 2011, the star’s belligerent behavior got her kicked off of a flight. Complaining that she had to throw up, Mueller tried to use the restroom before the plane took off but when she was told to remain seated, Mueller cursed the flight attendant out. She was promptly removed from the plane. Most recently, Mueller lost custody of her twin boys to actress Denise Richards.
Actor David Hasselhoff has publicly battled with alcohol for quite some time. The “Baywatch” star has been hospitalized several times because of alcohol poisoning. Showing up to the airport allegedly plastered out of his mind in 2006, Hasselhoff was kicked off the flight before he could even board. However, his rep has denied that the international star was drunk but blamed Hasselhoff’s erratic behavior on antibiotics.
If you’re slightly overweight, be forewarned before flying Southwest Airlines. Writer/director Kevin Smith was told by the airline that he was too fat to fly. The Clerks director originally purchased two tickets to comply with their policy but when he was switched on to an earlier flight, there was only one seat left. After disembarking, an angry Smith took to twitter to shame the airline for its “too fat to fly” policy. Smith tweeted, ” What was I gonna roll on a fellow passenger?”
It should come as no surprise that rocker Courtney Love has been kicked off of a flight before. Back in 2003, the troubled starlet got into a verbal spat on a Virgin Atlantic plane with a flight attendant. Her behavior was deemed a threat to the aircraft. Pulling into Heathrow Airport, police boarded the plane and escorted Love out in handcuffs.
