Monday’s Madame is a new column on MadameNoire that highlights inspirational women who are doing great things in black communities around the world. If you would like to submit an inspirational woman for consideration, please send her name, age, location, photo, and a blurb about the work she’s doing to editors@madamenoire.com.

Monday’s Madame: Jamaica Yancy

Age: 28

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Why she inspires us: Jamaica Yancy is the Founder and Executive Director of Mahogany Philly, an organization dedicated to nurturing a vibrant community for women of color in the Philadelphia area. Mahogany Philly was founded in January of 2012 as a group on the site, Meetup.com, and since then the organization has grown to include over 900 diverse women of various ages and backgrounds.

Jamaica has worked diligently to ensure that Mahogany is upholding its mission, using her marketing skills and desire to offer unique opportunities to women of color to increase the organization’s membership and create a place for women of color to meet, share ideas, garner support, travel, and grow together. She established a board of directors, organized a Mahogany Philly trip to Paris, and regularly hosts events such as Girls Nights In, movie nights, fitness events (hikes and dance classes), community service events (voter registration drives, fundraisers, and street cleaning), cultural events (museum trips, Big Hat Brunches, and High Tea), self-improvement gatherings, hair care workshops and self-defense classes. Jamaica is also fostering her vision to have a Mahogany network in cities across the country, beginning in the East Bay area of Los Angeles, California – all while planning to begin law school this fall.
