All these gutsy women have the original “Lonely Bridget” to thank for their freedom. In Fifth Century Ireland, St. Bridget complained that women were fed up with waiting around for their men to propose. In response to which, St. Patrick decreed that once every four years—on leap year—women were allowed to propose to their men.
