Just when things were getting back to normal for D’Angelo and he was touring the country delivering his brand of eclectic R&B soul and funk, up and comes a bump in D’s comeback road. According to the Chicago Tribune, D’Angelo has canceled upcoming shows in Chicago, Minneapolis, San Diego and more because he’s been hospitalized “due to a medical emergency.” And this emergency is clearly no joke, as the singer had to bail out on shows last week in New York and Maryland as well because he was in the hospital on the low-low.
A statement was put out by promoters from Live Nation saying that D’Angelo “expresses his sincere regret due to this unfortunate circumstance.” And his agent claims that “It’s serious, but he should be OK.”
Though D’Angelo has canceled shows, including one this Saturday in San Diego, surprisingly, he hasn’t backed out on the Friday show he’s supposed to take the stage for in San Francisco. Once his shows in August are finished (whether he goes through with them or not), D’Angelo will have a break from performing until October, when he will make his way to Austin, Texas.
After releasing Voodoo in 2000, we know that D’Angelo has been in and out of the public eye over the years (mostly out). He started performing again last year, even doing so for last year’s BET Awards, but hasn’t spoken on the release of a new album. With this news, we’re praying that the singer will be okay and if possible, that he’ll be able to continue performing and making new music. We can’t survive another sabbatical! Get well soon good, sir.
