Pass Or Play? Justin Timberlake Pays Homage To MJ And Takes Over NYC For “Take Back The Night”
With songs like this, Justin is about to have me thirsty for The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 when it drops on September 30. Sounding like something inspired by Michael Jackson’s whole Off The Wall and pieces of Thriller, “Take Back The Night” is a groove worthy Thank-God-It’s-Friday (too bad it’s only Tuesday) feel-good jam. Produced by Timbaland with help from Timberlake and J-Roc, it is the lead single from Timberlake’s second helping of the 20/20 Experience, and the video for it was directed by Jeff Nicholas, Jonathan Craen and Darren Craig. In it, Timberlake can be seen driving an old-school car around the NYC streets at night, and then eventually getting out to have a pop-lock battle with a little boy before joining a crowd of clubgoers at an underground spot. There are also clips from his performance at Yankee’s Stadium a few weeks back when he debuted the song while making stops on his “Legends of the Summer” tour with Jay Z. JT’s still got the moves, and the vocals are smooth as he mimics some of MJ’s hottest collaborations with Quincy Jones (check out the horns, the strings, and the “Take it ooooover!” part).
While it’s not the most exciting video you’ll see this year, by keeping things simple, it allows the track to shine through the most. Check out the video for yourself and let us know if you think it’s worth a play, or if you’re trying to pass it.
