Yesterday afternoon we were all shocked to learn that former Cleveland Cavaliers player and husband to Keyshia Cole, Daniel ‘Boobie’ Gibson, was being charged with 2nd degree assault and battery. While details surrounding the incident were scarce, what we did know was that the altercation occurred in New Orleans during the recently celebrated Essence Music Festival and that Daniel voluntarily turned himself in. As the day went on, it came out that Daniel approached a group of men after they disrespected his wife, Keyshia. The 27-year-old Texas native reached out to TMZ to share his side of the story.
“I was down there [in New Orleans] supporting my wife, she performed and things got a little exciting. Because it’s a legal issue, a lot of things are still pending and I can’t speak on,” Daniel shared.
When asked if the person disrespecting Keyshia was a fan, Daniel responded:
“It definitely wasn’t a fan [that was disrespecting her], but there was definitely some disrespect being show towards my wife [...] He disrespected my wife in a profane way.”
“There’s no question [that this is a case of me defending my wife's honor]. That would be the only reason why I’d be in a situation like that. I wouldn’t even allow myself to be in a situation like that because words don’t really bother me. But in this situation I felt like our circle and our safety was threatened. I just felt like I needed to take action.”
He went on to say that the person never touched Keyshia.
“He never got close to my wife.”
“I’m not the kind of guy to go out looking for trouble. I’m laid back, in general just looking to enjoy myself. We were looking to enjoy ourselves. But, the situation called for me to make sure that my wife was safe and everyone around us was safe.”
The Keyshia & Daniel: Family First star also revealed that as soon as he was contacted by the NOLA police regarding the charges, he let them know that he’d be willing to turn himself in whenever they needed him to.
“The police contacted me and I knew that something would come of the situation. I have nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to hide, so I told them whenever they needed me to come in and turn myself in, I’d do it. Whatever I could do to get that process behind me so that I could start my process and do what I need to do in order to make sure I was cool.”
As far as the rumors that the man he got into the altercation with walked away with a broken jaw, Daniel says he can’t confirm or deny whether or not the man was seriously injured.
“I don’t know. I haven’t seen him since that night. All I know is there was an altercation between me and a group of people.”
