When news that the Vh1 produced TLC biopic would feature rapper Lil Mama as Left Eye, folks were too hot. Everyone just knew that she was not the right casting choice. But slowly, as pictures of Lil Mama and her cast members dressed in their TLC garb started to surface, people were slowly swayed. And then even more so when the trailer for the film was released earlier this week.
Even if audiences see the movie and don’t believe Lil Mama embodied Left Eye, the women who worked with her and knew her better than any of us cosign her performance. So much so that they’re taking her on the road with them.
TLC is gearing up for a comeback, complete with an album and an L.A. Reid reunion. The album is set to be released on October 15 and will feature Lil Mama. She’ll also join TLC on stage for Vh1’s Mixtape Festival today and tomorrow.
Here’s what the members had to say about Lil Mama.
Chilli: “For 10 years we have been mourning the death of our sister Lisa, and although we have discussed the option of bringing in someone to perform with us, it never felt right at the time,” said Chilli. “Watching Lil Mama on the set of our movie CrazyHotCool: The TLC Story reminded us of Lisa’s spirit, and, for the first time since her passing, we felt everything come together in an organic way.”
T-Boz: “Lil Mama’s authentic style, although very different from Lisa’s, got our creative juices flowing. By bringing her in, we will continue to keep TLC’s music alive for a new generation of fans. We are thrilled to be writing this new chapter in the TLC story.”
Lil Mama, 23, said she was thankful for the opportunity.
“I am grateful to Chilli and T-Boz for the confidence they had in me to portray her in the film and to invite me to perform and record with them and pay tribute to her incredible talent.”
Whatever comes of this, it’ll be interesting to see Lil Mama on stage with these two.
