Despite his recent controversial slams against President Obama over his unexpected comments about the Trayvon Martin case, Tavis Smiley’s BlogTalkRadio network is taking off in the ratings. A Web-based platform, BlogTalkRadio is a social broadcasting network. It is growing in popularity because it lets anyone host a live call-in Internet broadcast using just a computer and a phone.

The Tavis Smiley Network (TSN), a network of programs developed for BlogTalkRadio, has attracted more than 1.5 million listeners since launching on June 25 of this year, reports Target Market News. TSN is the first network partnership for BlogTalkRadio with a national media personality. TSN shows include Tavis Talks, a daily news and opinion program that has hosted such high-profile guests as Larry King, Walter Mosley and Suze Orman.
There’s also Rolonda Watts’s show “Sundays With Rolonda;” “Kenneth Braswell: Ties Never Broken,” hosted by the founder of  Fathers Incorporated; and “Almost White” with Rick Najera, who is a comedian and playwright.
“TSN is an opportunity for us to deepen our connection with people and communities across the country,” said Smiley in a press statement.  “Our network hosts work hard to create unique programs with strong content driven by listeners and we are thrilled that they have responded so strongly.”

To capitalize on this momentum, TSN is set to premiere an additional slate of hosts after Labor Day, including political commentator and Howard University professor Michael Fauntroy; arts and culture critic Bill Banfield; and political theorist and New York Times bestselling author Benjamin Barber.

“TSN is a showcase of the online radio experience and hitting the 1.5 million mark so soon after launch is reflective of how our partnership is reshaping the media industry,” said Alan Levy, co-founder and CEO of BlogTalkRadio.
