It’s been about a week and a half since Lauryn Hill reported to a federal prison in Connecticut and all things considered, she seems to be doing well.
As we know, Lauryn was convicted of tax evasion and is now serving a three month sentence because of it. Well, her Tumblr administrator posted a note from Lauryn on Friday:
“I have known since very young to look for the purpose and lesson in everything, including the trials. Although it has taken some adjustment, I cannot deny the favor I have encountered while in here, and general warm reception from a community of people who despite their circumstances, have found unique ways to make the best of them. Thank you for the letters of concern and well wishes that I receive in the mail every day. Although I may not be able to write everyone back, please know that they have been received, read, acknowledged, and appreciated. With Love back, MLH”
As a beloved artist, it doesn’t come as much of a shock that her fellow inmates are being very kind to her. Plus, it is very likely that she is in a more “free” type of setting, for lack of a better term, since she (1) a celebrity and (2) incarcerated for a white collar crime. I mean, I’m not completely well-versed in the prison system but I’d be extremely surprised if Lauryn were being housed right with the more hardened criminals.
If she does the full three months, we could see a couple of more letters from Lauryn about what she’s learning and how she’s growing. Oh, and if you really want to be optimistic, she might even mention how this is experience is inspiring her to record new music when she’s released.
