Bitter, Much? Childhood Stars Who Are Or Were Struggling
Not every child star ends up living the dream. Sometimes getting famous early in life can have long-term consequences. These celebrities’ brush with stardom left them bitter, scarred, and angry.
Screech was one of the most loveable characters on “Saved By The Bell.” But lurking underneath his character was a bitter teen. Dustin went on to become a bitter man who chased fame in all the wrong ways: he released a tell-all book about his fellow classmates and a sex video that no one wanted to watch.
Jaleel seemed relatively well balanced for a child star until his ex-wife spilled his tea to the tabloids. She said that he beat her, flagrantly brought women home and forced her to hide from the public when she was pregnant so she wouldn’t scare the side pieces away. Wow.
Poor Gary grew up with a lot of anger management problems. After “Diff’rent Strokes,” he attempted suicide several times, went bankrupt and racked up several assault charges including one for domestic abuse. Although in Gary’s case it’s hard to tell if his troubles were due to the acting or the congenital condition that affected his height.
Todd Bridges also had a lot of trouble after “Diff’rent Strokes.” In 1983, he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. In 1987, he was arrested for making a bomb threat at a car dealership. In 1989, he pulled a gun on a mechanic and shot someone over a crack deal. Thankfully in the late 90s, Todd found spiritual salvation and put the drug life behind him.
When Lark dropped out of the spotlight, we figured she was just taking time out to do her. Turns out, she may have been struggling with bipolar disorder and working on publishing an incomprehensible self-help book. The stress of celebrity can’t be good for her condition.
After Maia’s time in the spotlight on “In The House,” she also struggled with schizophrenia — and drug abuse. But Maia seems to be turning her star around. She’s let go of the past and is looking toward a future that may include more acting roles.
No one knows exactly what’s going on with Macaulay Culkin. But we know he’s struggling. Whether he’s actually strung out on heroin, dealing with mental health issues or just having trouble getting himself together, we think he needs help.
A few years ago, the “Terminator 2” child star joined a long list of former child stars with domestic violence charges and a drug addiction. Recently, he’s been spending more time in jail than out of it — all related to his inability to keep his hands off of his girlfriend. Things look like they’re getting worse for Eddie instead of better. Maybe he should stop taking movie roles and concentrate on working on himself.
Most of us remember Cherie johnson as Laura Winslow’s best friend on “Family Matters.” When the TV roles dried up, Cherie looked for fame in other places. A few years ago, topless photos of the star began to circulate around the web. When those didn’t take off, she tried to shop around a reality show about her and her fiancee Raz-B’s brother Ricky Romance. Unfortunately for Cherie, no one was interested.
Lindsay has turned into the poster child for bitter, damaged child actors. She’s fallen out with her parents, gotten arrested, abused drugs and gone through every type of struggle and tribulation. We bet her parents wish they could turn back the clock and opt for soccer instead of acting lessons.
We were all shocked to hear about little Jamiee Foxworth. When we watched “Family Matters,” she felt like our own little sister. And no one wants to hear that their kid sister is doing adult videos. We were all relieved when she found a healthier way to return to the spotlight and appeared on VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew.”
For a while, Amanda Bynes played the good-girl child star to Lindsay Lohan’s hot mess. But then earlier this year, Amanda started to have some sort of melt down. She was smoking herbal in public, talking to herself, dressing oddly and involved in a lot of odd behavior. Now she’s facing charges for throwing a bong out of her apartment window. We hope Amanda gets better, whatever her problem is.
Before there was Lindsay, there was Britney. She shaved her head, married Kevin Federline and featured a good portion of her mental breakdown on a reality show. It looks like Britney may be on her way to getting it together, but we suspect that she just invested in a better PR team.
Farrah is the next generation of screwed up child star. She got her start on “Teen Mom” after she got pregnant in high school. When that show ended, she extended her 15 minutes by hiring a Adult Videos star, making a sex tape and pretending to be shocked when it “leaked.” We’re afraid to find out what’s next.
