After a bit of a hiatus from releasing new music, Trey Songz is back.
He’s been pretty much touring all over Europe for the past few months but has finally taken time to give some new material to his fans. Trey dropped his new single, “Sensational” on his Angel Network website, a social site for all things Trey songs and the people – okay, the ladies – who love them. One of the “perks” of being a member is that Trey will drop new music on the site from time to time before it is released anywhere else.
In “Sensational,” Trey is pretty much professing his love to his lady. He tells her that he’s been around the block but no one has ever compared to her. She makes him feel a way he’s never felt and he always wants to be with her. In his second verse, he breaks it down:
I can’t get enough of the things that you do, Wooo/Take your time don’t rush cuz you know what you do to get me in the mood/Your kiss, your lips taste sweet as honey…darling/I just lose myself in side of you, you/Touch me, hold me, need me, keep me, swear you’ll never leave me/And you’ll always be my sensational girl…
As you can hear, Trey has decided to be very ambitious and try his falsetto through most of the track. I’m not necessarily sure this is a good idea because it really isn’t his strongest vocal register. Also, that’s going to be very hard to hold on to and sound good singing live when it isn’t the key your normally sing.
Trey seems to be looking for a sound that fits him as he gets older. His last album, Chapter V, was clearly an example of that but it wasn’t a major hit with his fans. There’s nothing wrong with trying new sounds but he seems to be in an odd place musically where, if he “plays around” too much, he will alienate his core group of fans.
Anyway, check out his love song, “Sensational,” and tell me what you think (shout out to Miss Jia for uploading it to Soundcloud)!
