Outspoken rapper Lupe Fiasco had some harsh real talk for a group of Chicago high school grads assembled by Mass Black Male Graduation and Transition to Manhood organizers.

“Congratulations, you have graduated from one of the most terrible, substandard school systems in the entire world. You have just spent the last . . . 12 years receiving one of the worst educations on earth. You are at least four, five steps behind people in other countries that are younger than you,” Fiasco said according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The performer was the keynote speaker at an event which included 150 recent black male graduates. According to recent studies, only 39 percent of eligible black teens from the district’s pubic schools graduate.

A Chicago native himself, and a product of the public school system there, Fiasco’s remarks were well received. He parted with some personal thoughts on the issue of manhood.

“Transition to manhood is the most important thing that’s going on right now. The caps and the gowns and your tassels and your honorary blah blah blahs don’t mean nothing. That’s just dress. That’s just some clothes. Meaningless clothes, too, because they have no real purpose in life. They don’t keep you warm. What do they do? They just represent to someone else that you’ve achieved something. But then when you look back at it, what have you achieved?”

i like his music but Lupe is getting the hell on my nerves with his hipster nonsense. America does not have the best education but it’s FAR from the worst. If these kids received a horrible education it is because they probably grew up in the ghetto. What education did he get? None…exactly.

  • ImariRose

I agree with him but gosh, I think that’s the wrong time to say it.

Who’s to say they received the worst education unless you experienced education from ALL school and can objectively compare the level of education. This is propaganda. White people tell Black people their education is “inferior” to justify not hiring blacks. Meanwhile…white people can be remedial with a third education and, somehow…their education is good enough. Black people…we need to be careful what we tell our children. Don’t merely repeat what white people tell you about us. Especially, if you lack the ability to compare.

Um, how about NO! He may be telling the truth but it was the wrong venue to express his opinions. I don’t remember seeing Lupe on line striking with the teachers or at any town hall meeting trying to improve the situation with the schools. These were a group of young Black men and as a young Black man speaking to his “brothers” the topic of discussion should have been one of encouragement period point blank. Whether we like it or not in America, the only way for these young men to escape the new slavery (prison) is through education. Regarding CPS, I am a product of Chicago Public Schools and so is my child and its true they have a long way to go, the parents and community that surrounds them do as well. We will be better served as a people if and when we feel the schools are not teaching our children enough then parents, friends and relatives should step up to make up the difference because bad mouthing Chicago Public Schools and diminishing the accomplishments of its graduates only feeds the monster that preys on our people.

while they was striking they could have been at school teaching .

Harsh but true. High school used to prepare you for life, now it is just a requirement.

I disagree with him, I ENVY CPS students because they have an advantage 2 school tuition free as long as they graduate (I’m sure with excellent grades n eat not ) but also because Chicago had numerous schools that have trade programs students can learn while in high school. I went to school in the burbs where they did a trial run of it, IMO it failed. CPS the system is in a chaotic state but I think their educational quality is still top notch… From my outside POV.

By the I heard that he went to Thornton, a school that’s not exactly in Chicago…IJS

    Well, he’s right.

He’s right, point blank. American kids are getting fatter and stupider.
