Pass Or Play? Janelle Monae Jams Til The End In “Dance Apocalyptic”
Half the time when I listen to Janelle Monae’s music, I don’t know what she’s singing about at first. But I always have a good time figuring it out. And such is the case with her new single “Dance Apocalyptic.” In her new video, the black and white diva takes her hair out of her customary pompadour and lets it fall around her shoulders in loose crinkles as she encourages a group of frenzied teenagers to dance as the world around them comes to an end.
You’re so freaked out!
Worried about the bomb threats
You bought a house!
But I’m allergic to the house pets
They bought a new wife
Poor shattered little lonely men
As I said, I’m not entirely sure what she’s trying to say but if I had to guess, the lyrics make me think of all the craziness that’s a part of our everyday lives. Mass shootings, bombings, super storms, sinkholes, climate change and loose morals. You know religious folk would say we’re living in “the last days.” We all remember the hoopla surrounding December 21st of last year. Every other day something or someone threatens to take us out. But Janelle asks “if the world says it’s time to go, tell me, will you break out?”
In other words, still my amateur interpretation, since we really can’t determine when or how the world is going to end, we should just dance til the end. Well alright!
As you might expect from Monae the song is funky and high energy. Even as you’re trying to decipher the lyrics, you’ll be bopping to the rhythm. I dig it. But you take a listen and tell us what you think.
