“The Velvet Teddy Bear” Ruben Studdard Competing On New Season Of “The Biggest Loser” To Drop Pounds
From the moment we were first introduced to Ruben Studdard, singing Luther Vandross and Donny Hathaway classics on the second season of American Idol in 2003, he has been a pretty big fella. That’s how he ended up with the nickname “The Velvet Teddy Bear,” both for his size and his silky smooth vocals. And while his weight is something many people know Studdard for, it’s also been something Studdard has been struggling with for years.
The stress of being in the spotlight after winning his season of Idol caused Studdard to gain “some 100 pounds,” peaking at more than 450 pounds at one point. Though Studdard had managed to become a vegetarian years back and initially tried to lose weight because of a history of diabetes and high blood pressure in his family, after his marriage ended to Surata Zuri McCants in 2008 and he had to pay thousands in back taxes, he wound up gaining weight again. Because of all that, his weight has been on yo-yo mode for a while now.
So now Ruben Studdard has decided to get some real help. He was working out with celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson (who works with Ciara and many others) for a while, but now, according to ‘Today’, he’s taking things a step further and has decided to compete on the 15th season of NBC’s The Biggest Loser. The show never really has any notable names competing, but he will have to be the exception. The new season is set to begin on October 8, and if Studdard has ever watched the show, he probably knows he’ll need to get mentally prepared for the physical a** kicking he’s about to go through. I used to watch the show a lot a few years ago and they literally run those folks silly for hours each day and put them in intense training, so much so that some manage to lose more than five to ten pounds a week! But maybe after trying so many different methods and trying hard on his own to good and bad results, Studdard is ready for this type of help. We will be rooting for you Ruben!
