Following in the footsteps of Lauryn Hill and Wesley Snipes, rapper Fat Joe will be heading to prison for failing to pay more than $700,000 in taxes on more than $3 million worth of income from the years of 2007-2010. Not only that, but Fat Joe, who was born Joseph Cartagena, was also ordered to pay a $15,000 fine and have one year of “supervised release” once he gets out.

Cartagena actually lives in Florida these days, but the taxes owed were from businesses in New Jersey he owns that received income over the years, so he was prosecuted in Jersey. According to the New York Times, New Jersey has been very unsparing when it comes to prosecuting celebrities trying to duck and dodge their taxes. Lauryn Hill was prosecuted in New Jersey and sentenced to three months in jail (which she is reportedly supposed to begin serving in July), and federal authorities in the state have also gone after Mary J. Blige and her husband Kendu Isaacs, placing a lien on some of their property. Blige and her husband better learn from Hill and Fat Joe, because clearly folks will throw you in jail (and throw away the key) over money I’m sure some of these celebs spend in a few months’ time.

Cartagena, who at one time last year blamed “fancy guys in bow ties” who failed to keep a good eye over his finances, apologized to his friends and family before being sentenced to the four months. He was released on bail of $250,000, but the rapper will have to report to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons by August 26.

It’s very unfortunate, but why do these “celebrities” feel they shouldn’t have to pay taxes like everyone else? Do they have bad accounting/financial teams?
