More Than Just A Little Fender-Bender: Celebs Who Repeatedly Wreck Their Rides
Car accidents can happen even with the most experienced drivers, but these 15 celebrities may want to hang up the car keys and hire a 24-hour chauffeur. That has to be cheaper than paying for car repairs, increased insurance fees, and not to mention tickets.
Soulja Boy’s driving record is less than stellar. In July of last year, he and his Bentley were involved in a fender-bender with another car. Initially, Soulja Boy insisted he wasn’t the one behind the wheel. Soon after, he fessed up saying he was driving the car but the accident wasn’t his fault and called the other driver a racist. Earlier this year, the “Crank That” rapper’s Bentley was involved in another accident. This time he fled the scene and would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for some stealthy police work and surveillance footage that busted the 22-year-old. His car was impounded last month and police are looking for more witnesses to come forward.
Paris Hilton has stepped into the role of a businesswoman and hotel magnate but there was a time when the Hollywood socialite was a terror on the road. After her DUI charge in 2006, Hilton was pinched for driving with a suspended license. The former reality television star was also busted for speeding after she was clocked doing twice the limit. And she’s been involved in several minor accidents, including hitting a parked car.
Hollywood star Halle Berry made headlines in 1997 for a hit-and-run accident but don’t ask her for any details because she doesn’t remember. Berry’s rental SUV ran a red light and smashed into another car. Suffering from amnesia, Berry drove home not realizing there was a gash on her head. After seeking medical treatment, she reported the accident. The Monster’s Ball star pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of an accident and was fined $300, put on three years’ probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service. Berry volunteered at a shelter for battered women and children in L.A. to complete her community service. Saying she found her calling, Berry continues to volunteer at the Jenesse Center “It changed my life,” said Berry. “I hadn’t been doing enough. It was time.”
Amanda Bynes has been making headlines for the past couple years for reasons other than her acting skills. The former child star has several cases pending in court regarding her lack of driving skills. In addition to a hit-and-run charge, Bynes was also busted for driving under the influence, along with numerous traffic infractions. Bynes, who has had her driver’s license suspended several times, left sunny California and made a home for herself in New York City. Although she hasn’t been busted behind the wheel in the Big Apple, Bynes was recently arrested after police were called to her apartment building over suspicion of marijuana smoke in the lobby.
Justin Bieber hasn’t had his driver’s license that long but he’s already known for speeding through the streets of Hollywood in one of several custom cars. The “Baby” singer has been pulled over and ticketed by the police numerous times. His reckless driving is so out of hand, former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, who lives in the same gated Calabasas community that Bieber calls home, hopped in his Toyota Prius to chase after the pop star. Johnson was determined to let him know that speeding up and down the blocks was dangerous to the children playing and other vehicles on the road.
Since her divorce from heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, actress Robin Givens has kept a relatively low profile. However, the Boomerang actress popped up in the news after hitting an 89-year-old pedestrian in Miami in 2004. Maria Antonia Alcover was about to step onto the sidewalk just as Givens was making a right turn. Her Mercedes SUV knocked Alcover to the ground. She suffered internal injuries and doctors initially feared Alcover would lose her foot. Givens stayed with the senior citizen until paramedics arrived and was cited for failing to use due care when a pedestrian was in the crosswalk.
Lindsay Lohan is known for her bad driving almost as much as she’s known for going in and out of rehab. The troubled starlet was collared twice in 2007 for DUIs and also clipped a pedestrian with her vehicle on several occasions and hit numerous parked cars. And let’s not forget the time she hit an 18-wheeler last year and then switched seats with her assistant so she wouldn’t have another accident under her belt. The Liz & Dick star is currently serving out her 90-day rehab sentence after pleading no contest to reckless driving and giving a police officer false information following the 2012 accident.
Rapper Lil Twist may not have many hits in the music industry but he is BFF’s with one of the biggest pop stars in the world: Justin Bieber. The pals are so close, Twist frequently borrows one of his friend’s cars to tool around Los Angeles in. Twist also frequently crashes his friend’s car. Just this year alone, the Dallas rapper hit a paparazzo with Bieber’s Ferrari and then smashed his Fisher Karma into two poles a few months later. Instead of a flashy sports car that’s too much to handle, Twist now drives a Range Rover through the streets of L.A.
Sometimes the rock & roll lifestyle can be deadly, even for those who aren’t musicians. 3 Doors Down bassist Robert Todd Harrell was arrested this past April for vehicular homicide. Under the influence of several narcotics, including hard cider, prescription Lortab and Xanax, Harrell ran into Paul Howard Shoulders Jr.’s pick-up truck. Shoulders was ejected after his vehicle lost control and died. Harrell was also charged with bringing narcotics into jail after authorities found Xanax pills, 24 Oxycodone pills and four Oxymophorne pills in his bag. Freed on bond, Harrell checked into rehab a few days after his arrest.
Chris Brown loves foreign cars just as much as any r&b singer/rapper. The “Don’t Judge Me” singer has several high-end luxury cars in his fleet that catches the attention of the paparazzi — and the police. Brown has been pulled over several times in recent years but he could be facing serious charges stemming from an accident last month. The Range Rover Brown was driving hit a Mercedes and he allegedly gave the responding officer false insurance information. His attorney, Mark Geragos, responded to the allegations by saying Brown gave the correct insurance details to the woman involved in the Mercedes and that he called the other driver to confirm the insurance details, only for the woman to hang up on him.
Britney Spears has never been arrested behind the wheel of a car but that doesn’t mean the pop star is a great driver. Spears has made a couple of bad decisions while operating a vehicle. There was the time Spear ran over the foot of a paparazzo chasing her car. Apparently not a member of AAA, the “Oops…I Did It Again” singer also abandoned her car in the middle of the street after getting a flat tire. And who could forget the photos taken in 2006 of the former “American Idol” judge driving around with her four-month old son Sean Preston in her lap? “Because of a recent incident when I was trapped in my car without my baby by a throng of paparazzi, I was terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger,” Spears explained about the incident in a statement. “I love my child and would do anything to protect him.”
When driving his children around town, De’Angelo Holmes should probably hire someone to be behind the wheel. The rapper, better known as D-Roc from the Ying Yang Twins, was arrested last summer for driving under the influence. To make matters worse, his three-year old and two-month old children were in the car with him. After being pulled over for a traffic infraction, the arresting officer said D-Roc’s eyes appeared “bloodshot and glazed” and he is said to have “mumbled” and “slurred” his speech while talking. He was hauled in once he failed a field sobriety test.
DMX has been staying out of trouble as of late and hopefully staying out of the driver’s seat. There was a time when the Yonkers rapper made more headlines for his reckless driving than his music. DMX, real name Earl Simmons, has been pulled over for many infractions including speeding, failure to signal before turning and driving without a license. But none of that compares to the charges Dark Man X racked up in 2004. He was arrested for coke possession, criminal impersonation, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, menacing and DUI at JFK airport after he claimed to be a federal agent and tried to carjack a vehicle. X pleaded guilty to parole violation and was sentenced to 70 days.
Michelle Rodriguez was popped for two DUI charges in 2003 and served 48 hours in jail after pleading no contest. While on location in Hawaii for ABC’s “Lost,” she was pulled over by the police numerous times and cited for speeding. Rodriguez was collared yet again for DUI while in Hawaii and spent five days in jail there and was then sentenced to 30 days in L.A. for violating her parole.
Singer Brandy started out in the entertainment industry in her early teens but the “I Wanna Be Down” singer took some time off from the spotlight a few years ago and with good reason. Back in December of 2006, the R&B singer was involved in a fatal car crash. Brandy was driving her Land Rover on the 405 Freeway in L.A. when she crashed into the car in front of her, setting off a collision that involved three other vehicles. The driver of the car Brandy initially hit died from her injuries. The former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant opened up about the crash recently. “I would hear what people would say, and still to this day they know that that’s a button,” Brandy said. “They know that they can call me a murderer or call me someone that killed someone. They know that is a button for me. A murderer is someone who premeditates it. I didn’t wake up that day to be involved in a fatal car crash. I didn’t plan for that. And if I could take it back, I would.”
