No matter if you agree with it or not, for many people, including celebrities, weight-loss surgery has been the go-to method in order to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. We’re all built differently with a range of dietary and lifestyle habits. While most celebrities battle to stay slender and in-shape for the cameras, others prefer to be just the opposite. However, there are some celebs who have taken their health into their own hands and decided to undergo weight-loss surgery to live healthier.

Before having gastric bypass surgery, Star Jones weighed more than 300lbs. As a talk show host, she was one of  “The View” members who always remained open and sharing about her life. However, viewers watched Star Jones slowly shrink before their eyes, without her ever mentioning why. In the end, she admitted that had gastric bypass surgery, but only wanted to mention it after the fact, once she knew she couldn’t fail.

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey was always ridiculed for his weight. Many columnists have said that being so heavy would not allow him to live healthily or successfully make it in a higher level of government. Many said that he’d have to lose weight in order to be considered as a possible presidential nominee. To lose weight, Chris Christie has undergone Lapband surgery.

Etta James

Etta James has always been known for her big voice and amazing songs. However, having a body of equal size was taking a toll on her. At 400lbs and just 5’3″ tall, Etta’s weight was causing some health issues. In 2001, she underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost 235lbs. She was able to sustain her new weight before her death, but in 2020 she suffered from all sorts of medical conditions, including cancer.

Carnie Wilson

Carnie Wilson has undergone two different weight loss surgeries. Her first surgery, gastric bypass, was done in 1991. Crazily enough, her surgery was broadcasted live over the Internet. Bypass surgery was successful and Carnie went from a size 28 to a size 6. However, by 2011, she gained her weight back. She then decided to have Lapband surgery to hopefully jump-start her success.

Randy Jackson

For years, Randy Jackson was the face of “American Idol,” even though he’s decided to call it quits in the show. If you’ve watched the show, you’ve probably noticed that Randy has lost a ton of weight. At 329lbs, Randy was diagnosed with sleep apnea and Type-2 diabetes. He decided that gastric bypass was the best way to regain his health. He’s lost 114lbs and now wears a large.

John Popper

John Popper, front man of the band Blues Traveler, is well-known for his guitar and harmonica skills, as well as his singing abilities. However, in the past, he was also known for his size. John weighed in at more than 400lbs and suffered from heart problems. In 2000, he decided to undergo gastric bypass and has since lost 200lbs. He’s even needed to get a new harmonica and guitar belt.

Al Roker

Al Roker has been a long-running newscaster on the “Today Show.” He’s known for his personality and humor during weather reports as well as audience interviews. Back in 2002, Al Roker weighed 320lbs. After using diets, he lost 50lbs, but was still overweight. To help keep the weight off and change his dietary habits, Al underwent gastric bypass and has now lost more than 100lbs. He’s even run the New York Marathon since his surgery.

Patti Austin is one of the few celebrities that is open and willing to talk about her choice to undergo gastric bypass surgery. She’s long stated that she was in denial of her poor health, despite the fact that both of her parents died from a stroke and diabetes. Before surgery, she suffered with asthma and type 2 diabetes. In 2005 she and her doctor decided that surgery was the best, and within the first year, she went from 300lbs to 180lbs.

Back in 1998, Rosanne Barr decided that gastric bypass was the best way for her to regain control of her health and her weight. After the surgery she was able to lose 80lbs and has continued to maintain her much slimmed down figure. She also underwent breast reduction surgery which also made her a lot healthier and comfortable in her body.

Ann Wilson of the female rock band Heart was overweight and was sick of wearing nothing but black. On stage and in everyday life, she found herself hiding behind her sister, who was much thinner. However, after having a gastric band surgically put around her stomach, she has lost more than 60lbs. Now she no longer needs to shy away from the limelight.

For Sharon Osbourne, her choice of weight loss surgery wasn’t the best one for her and her outcome wasn’t as successful as others. Back in 1999 she underwent Lapband surgery and was able to lose 100lbs. However, despite losing weight originally, she gained 15lbs back and was having trouble with her band. She eventually had surgery to have it removed and she’s now a spokeswoman for the Atkins diet.

Even after losing 106lbs in just one years, Lisa Lampanelli is still as funny as ever. After undergoing gastric sleeve surgery in March 2012, she’s become a brand new woman and has embraced her new skinny body. She’s said how she completely loves being able to shop in normal stores for clothes that actually fit her.

Diego Maradona was once a soccer player for Argentina. Despite his active lifestyle, he once weighed in at over 250lbs, and being only 5’4″ wasn’t working out to his advantage. He has continuously struggled with his weight throughout his life, even after using ephedrine to shed some pounds. In 2005, he went under the knife for weight loss surgery. Though he’s lost some weight, he’s also checked into weight loss spas to assist him.

Author Anne Rice is one of those writers that can touch upon any and all subjects, including Christian literature, sensual art, and even metaphysical gothic stories. Back in 2003, when she weighed 255lbs, Anne knew that she needed to do something, especially since diets weren’t doing much for her. After dealing with sleep apnea and diabetes, she underwent gastric bypass and has lost 103lbs.
