No Groupie Love Here (At Least We Hope Not…): NBA Ballers And Their Number One Fans–Their Boos
Is it just me, or is this the season where all the NBA stars start showing love to their ladies all over Facebook, Instagram and Twitter? Hmm…blame it on time off after getting kicked out of the playoffs or not even making it in. Either way, we’re all for love, especially when we know of so many ballers out here with side chicks who can’t seem to choose one nice lady to settle down with. But these guys are either very serious about their lady loves, or have already put a ring on it, and we love it! Check out these guys with their favorite girls (groupies get back!).
New York Knick Iman Schumpert and Elle Varner
Looks like somebody is finally getting that refill she used to sing about…Was that corny of me? Ah well. Anyway, the very cute couple are pretty official these days, as the two have been seen vacationing in Aruba and as you can see above, getting cute, comfy and close with one another out in public. Just last year they seemed to be just friends, but in the year that this New York Knicks star’s high-top fade has grown to maximum heights, they’ve definitely become a whole lot more. And he’s not shy about showing her off on his social media. So cute!
Miami Heat LeBron James and Savannah Brinson
Despite how some people might feel about LeBron James, no one can deny that the uber-talented baller and his high school sweetheart are absolutely adorable. She seems to be his biggest supporter, and they share family photos and their love via social media often. The couple, who have two sons together in LeBron Jr. and Bryce, finally got engaged in December of 2011, and they’re set to be man and wife in September.
New York Knick Amar’e Stoudemire and Alexis Welch
It wasn’t the easiest road to happy coupledom for Amar’e and Alexis. Before they actually made it official, she had already given him three beautiful children, and what did he give her? He was all in front of paparazzi cameras caking it up with Ciara (I have a feeling La La had something to do with it). When that sham was finally over, he realized that Alexis was the right woman for him, so he put a ring on it, and the two married at the end of last year. They added another baby to the bunch last month and seem happier than ever.
Phoenix Sun Shannon Brown and Monica
After her 11-year relationship with rapper Rocko ended (one that brought into the world two sons), I’m sure it wasn’t easy for Monica. But she found love again in the most unexpected of ways: through the fine fella cast to be her pretend boo in her “Love All Over Me” video. While Shannon and Monica had only met in June of 2010, they were already tying the knot in November of that same year. Almost three years later, things still appear to be going exceptionally well, as the couple is expecting their first child together (her third, his second). Fingers crossed for a girl!
Oklahoma City Thunder Serge Ibaka and Keri Hilson
If you were wondering why Keri Hilson was saying she was taking a short leave of absence from music, this fine man standing behind her is a good reason why she might be doing so. Serge Ibaka and Hilson have been getting pretty close for more than a year and he posts pictures of her on his Instagram often for all his followers to see. Somebody’s in love! And you know it’s real because that man has her cooking him fufu for dinner and Lord knows that’s not a simple task for anybody.
Miami Heat Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union
Okay, so this is another couple that got off to a complicated start. Despite marrying his high school sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches, the two had some major issues they couldn’t work out, and Wade wound up filing for divorce in 2007. But before the ink had settled on the divorce papers, Wade had started to get close with Union. There are even rumors that they started dating before Wade filed for divorce. However, the drama that followed them never kept Wade and Union’s relationship from growing. And while they don’t know when or if they’ll get married (since they’re both divorcees), they’re happy as they are. Just check out Gabi’s smile!
Miami Heat Chris Bosh and Adrienne
This relationship sort of came out of nowhere, but boy has it blossomed, and blossomed fast! The two got married in 2011 and a year later, brought their little guy Jackson into the world. And they’re already expecting another baby soon. Until then, Adrienne will continue to show off her cute family on Instagram. But how did they meet? In an interview with Elle in 2011, Bosh broke it down:
“I met her in New York at a charity event—her friend liked the guy I was with. We eventually struck up a conversation and exchanged numbers. Then it was a true courting session over three months on the phone. I met her in July, and we didn’t go on our first date until October.”
Cleveland Cavalier Daniel “Boobie” Gibson and Keyshia Cole
What can we say, they got that hood love. And it works! Keyshia and Daniel quietly started dating in 2009 and by January of the next year, the two were engaged. They welcomed their first child into the world, Daniel Hiram Gibson, Jr, in March of 2010, and by May of 2011, the couple finally tied the knot. And if that wasn’t enough, they renewed their vows in September of the same year. Since then, they’ve let their fans in to their relationship via social media, and they’re each other’s biggest supporters, even through the ratchet moments (like when Keyshia called out Michelle Williams after Bey’s Super Bowl performance this year…). They continue to show the world their love through their reality show, which was on BET, called Keyshia and Daniel: Family First.
New York Knick Carmelo Anthony and La La
It always seems like La La and Carmelo have been together forever. It hasn’t been close to forever, but they have held each other down for some years now. The couple started dating way back in the early part of the millennium, and were engaged in 2004. Soon after all that, La La became pregnant with their son Kiyan, who was born in 2007. By 2010, the couple finally got married after years of people asking questions, and since then, they’ve withstood rumors of marital discord and trifling folks claiming they know that homegirl tastes like cereal. So how did they meet? In an interview with ESPN, here’s what they said together:
LaLa: We met through DJ Clue, a mutual friend that I work with on TV. So you asked him about me. You did ask him about me! Melo: I wasn’t stalking you. LaLa: But you asked him about me and then he kept telling me that Melo wanted to meet me. Then he introduced us. We were just friends for a while and then, it just kind of progressed from a friendship into a relationship.
New York Knick Tyson Chandler and Kimberly
The fashion “It” couple (at least in New York) have come a long way, and what we like most about them is the fact they are all about philanthropic work (including a relief effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina), which they do together of course. They were married in 2005 and have three beautiful children together. They continue to hold each other down in very fancy attire on red carpets everywhere.
Now Retired Grant Hill and Tamia
While as a kid I would have loved to see Grant Hill with Khadijah James after he appeared on Living Single, Hill and singer Tamia are now one of my favorite couples. The couple met through one of my absolute favorite singers, Anita Baker, and by 1999, they were married. They have two beautiful children, and while she has been his biggest fan while he’s been on the court, he’s been her biggest fan while she makes classic music. He even showed up as her very real life love interest in her music video, “Beautiful Surprise” in 2012. Love them!
