Despite Paying Off Her Debt At The Last Minute, Lauryn Hill Sentenced To 3 Months In Prison For Tax Evasion

Despite her best efforts to avoid jail time because of her failure to pay taxes over the years, including paying off her tax debt at the 25th hour, Lauryn Hill has just been sentenced to three months in prison, as well as three additional months of home confinement for tax evasion.

According to the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, while in court in Newark, New Jersey today, Hill tried to explain to the judge that she had every intention to pay those taxes, but wasn’t capable of doing so during a time when she separated herself from the music industry.

“I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that.”

And as we said, she made an attempt and successfully completed payment of those taxes to the state and federal government, with her attorney saying she paid more than $970,000.

However, it seems that it was a little too late. You could say that things could be a lot worse, especially since Hill was facing a maximum sentence of “one year each on three counts.” But as a mother of six children, prison is the last place she needs to be. Hill and her attorney were hoping just for probation, and she even plead guilty, but just like actor Wesley Snipes (who served more than two years in prison for failing to file federal income taxes and more and was just recently released), she will have to face jail time despite paying back what she owed.

We’ll keep you updated on when she’s expected to start her sentence when the information is released, and any statements she puts out about the case, possibly on her blog. This is such a shame for such an extraordinarily talented woman, and we wish her the best.

lindsay lohan and casey anthony are WHERE right now? smh

    • Guest360

These are federal charges. What the states do is up to them but that has no bearing on what the federal government is and what their laws are.

I have yet to understand how folks still think in 2013 the IRdamnS is playing about getting their money. They are the ultimate pimp and they will not go unpaid. While I wish time behind bars, federal time at that on no one, if you haven’t paid the IRS more than they can garnish or sell then you can fully expect to be in court with a prison sentence on the table.

THANK YOU! You can mess around and not pay your taxes if you want to but the government always knows. They will get it out of you one way or another. Now you can either do what you’re supposed to do the first time, or get yourself thrown in prison where they’ll make you work for $2 a day until you pay off your debt. Your choice lol.

Lindsey Lohan can steal jewelry, get into fights in clubs, get caught with drugs, be an alcoholic, drive intoxicated while endangering the lives of others and this woman gets sent to prison for not paying taxes which technically isn’t even a law??? See how they do us?

    • hollyw

Taxes is federal law. Every citizen must pay taxes. Lindsey has done a lot, but one thing she ain’t never do is mess w/ Uncle Sam’s moulah!

She’s lucky she only got 3 months!!! Hopefully this will be her only prison sentence!!

  • Ebby

Daxm, hang in Hill. It’s just 3 months it could have been 3 years. I thought thAt judge would at least give you a break. SMH

  • Mr. Ron Isley got more time, so she got a good deal.

    • ashley79

Even Wesly Snipes got more time.

  • just a way to make sure every last black person goes to jail at least once smdh

  • Guest360

I feel bad but the law is the law. No one is exempt from it. Not being in the music industry anymore is not a reason to not do what every working American is required to do. If you do the crime, you should do the time. And be thankful for the time you did get. At least you’re not Wesley Snipes lol

Lindsey Lohan gets away with a lot of stuff, let’s see if Lauren can get a break!!

      • scandalous7

YES! just said the exact same thing on a yahoo blog

        • Kamille

Unfortunately for Lauren she is dealing with the Federal Government and not the incredibly lenient States of CA, and NY who have let Lindsay Lohan do everything short of committing murder and sliding on the charge. If she were delinquent on her State Income Taxes she might have been alright but when you messing with the Pimp that is Uncle Sam you don’t get to play with his money.

    • TRUTH IS

Theres no law about paying taxes to the guvment

      • Guest360

Title 26 of the Code of Laws of the United States of America (USC). Faulty logic like yours is the reason people get charged with felonies and thrown in prison.

  • JaneDoe

Offense meet punishment.. Hopefully she learns from this

  • Six kids! They know she should be with them ..sad

    • JaneDoe

Six kids means that she shouldn’t be jailed like everyone else? Really

      • Diisha Hicks

not paying for taxes is not a crime…We need to make room for business men, political figures and movie stars

        • Candacey Doris

Not paying taxes IS a crime. Especially when all she has to do to get money is hold a few shows. Every single fan of hers who can afford it (and some who can’t) go to her shows as long as they’re able.

    • Guest360

I’m sorry but if kids were the reason no one should go to jail then everyone would get off for the crimes they commit. SHE should have thought about what would happen to her kids. Not the courts.
