It appears that 24-year-old Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky got way more than he bargained for when he decided to offer his two cents on dark-skinned women and their choice of lipstick color. In case you missed it, the outspoken New Yorker expressed during an interview that he didn’t find red lipstick to be attractive and dark-skinned women and that only fair-skinned women could get away with rocking a red lip.

A$AP was blasted by women across the web almost immediately for his ridiculous and unwarranted comment. Even fellow Harlem emcee Azealia Banks went after the rapper, telling him that he needs to just “come out of the closet” already.

Now, almost two months later, Rocky has decided to respond to harsh criticism he’s received as a result of his comments. In an interview with 93.9 WKYS, he said that Black women are super sensitive when you comment on their appearance and dramatically claimed that Black girls seemed like that were ready to “Rick Ross boycott him.”

“Black girls just, ah man, went crazy. They just took it how they took it. This is actually my second time talking about it cause I really don’t really look at it as an issue. If people get upset at that I think it’s petty at the same time. It’s like they d*mn near wanna Rick Ross boycott me right now, over some lipstick controversy. Black girls, you know how sensitive they are, but they our sisters man. It is what is man. I come from a Black home, so I know how sensitive Black women can be. Especially when you talking about they looks or something like that. You can’t say nothing about they glasses, they nails, none of that because then you’re a womanizer or you’re a racist. I don’t know how I’m going to be racist. I have to wake up and look at my black a** in the mirror everyday. It’s like, what are you talking about? But it is what it is, man. I’m proud to be Black.”

Clearly, he still doesn’t get it.

Black people are so sensitive and over politicized every damn thing. I bet if he had said light skin Blacks don’t look good etc.. then it wouldn’t be an issue. First of all he didn’t even say Black women, he said dark skin, and probably meant someone like the shade of a Wesley Snipe. I know lots of folks who don’t think everyone looks good in certain colours.

Also by red colour lipstick, he is probably not even aware of different shades of red, but just the bright, stop sign colour.

People are so ridiculous and hypocritical, you can’t say ish..

  • Zowie

So we can add misogyny to his colorism complex. Cool.

  • ForComments

Who the hell is Asap Rocky?

  • Who’s labia lips are RED though?

    • ksmall

lol. who knows how things went down (no pun intended) back in medieval china. anything associated with sex is always exaggerated even nowadays.

  • yep!

  • Chris Phil

Ya’ll are sensitive and immature. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Bright red lipstick does look kind of goofy on a darker girl. Dark red lipstick–looks more appealing. That’s an opinion. Can you take it or are you going to break down and lash out with the wrath of god? Each and everyone of you has said waaaaay worse things about each other, black people in general, and black men. I can’t believe that what I am reading is the future of black women. — Blow & Dope

    • Zowie

He said dark girls can’t wear any kind of red lipstick.

  • We can be racist against our own. Just because a person is black does not automatically make them anti-racist. In fact, I think all of us could observe our self-hatred and racism more.

  • Ariel

Rocky has some beautiful teeth. Leave the grills up to the people who have a horrendous teeth.

  • Ariel

I hope he doesn’t think that just because white girls didn’t comment that there’s nothing wrong with his statement and it’s just black girls making a fuss because that is false. I give him credit for still standing by his statement because some celebrities would have denied, covered up, or falsely apologized for saying it, but it’s still wrong. Furthermore, he has some beautiful teeth so he needs to leave those grills alone.

  • Almond E Brown

    His ignorance is astounding.

  • kb

He said dark skin can girls can rock something light skin women can’t so, I dunno it seems like he was even-handed and anyway who care what ASAP rocky thinks?!

  • Who is ASAP Rocky?

  • jak

What is with these rappers talking all out of their asses and then being all “shocked” somebody called them on their moronic comments. Will we ever get a rapper that has even a half an ounce of common sense again in this decade, Damn.

  • Little boy, if it wasn’t an issue why mention it to begin why. And yes I feel the need to “Rick Ross” alot of you rappers and “stars”. “Rick Ross” – to hold one accountable for their actions and words. I like it, I like the new meaning. People like him are the reason black women in general still get stereotyped. “Oh they are so quick to get mad, they are sensitive, they always want to fight, they shouldn’t wear this or they can’t wear that with their skin color.” Meanwhile he looks like kissing him would give you gonorrhea and every known STI in the universe plus fleas. But what he’s not getting is, it’s not about skin color, it’s about him thinking he has the right to tell ANY woman how to dress or wear her make-up, regardless of skin color. If the black women in his house are ignorant that doesn’t mean the rest of us are. But thanks for helping to pour more poop on us, I’m just gonna Rick Ross you.

  • Mia

What I still don’t understand is when did black men get their sh yt together to the point that they feel as if they have the right to always tear down black women? And then it’s always black men who don’t date black women who have the most to say. From this fool, Brian White, and that angry idiot who helped Stella get her groove back.

  • moniqhar

Dude needs some brasso for that grillll.. have 32 seats yuck mouth

The problem is that he was given a platform to speak from and he decided to use it. Before you decide to become critical of your own race, you need to think before you speak. His comment made no sense and served no purpose. Who told him that he even had the ability to critique our sisters. He looks like a clown in spite of what his team is telling him. i saw an interview about him, where they said that he is suppose to be into fashion and setting a trend. I am from the old school and he has no fashion sense about him. I’m sorry I sound just like him, Some one needs to school him and tell him to respect our women across the board.

  • ChiTown Princess

So now he’s the victim? Please!
He’s the one who chose to let that ignorant opinion of his go public for all of us to hear, maybe he should have kept that opinion to himself, then we won’t be “Rick Rossing” him. He can rot in hell for all I care.

  • scandalous7

I dont think black men get it, I really dont. I dont think they care either , they just gunna feel how they feel about us. Is what it is, nothing we can do about it.

    • Gina

We CAN do something about it, we can STOP supporting Black men in everything they do!

      • Gina

Never feel helpless, their are so many ways to degrade Black men as they are degrading us! You can get on TV and tell the world of Black men and their homosexual lifestyles, their high prison rates, lack of a college education, their absence in the raising of their children and etc. Fight fire with fire!

      • Yeah you’re right. Stop poppin your a** in the club to that garbage that degrades us. Stop downloading (legally) their trash and let the “fair skinned” women buy his music if that’s what they want to do.

I won’t part with my hard earned money on fools who don’t get it. Not that I know who in the heck he even is.

  • Tonyoardee

Why are yall so damn sensitive tho?? like just chill like the beckys

    • Nia

The beckys are the ones who got Rick Ross’s Reebok deal pulled.

      • Word. Beckys are VERY litigious.

      • Gina

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!! Becky’s don’t play that mess either!

    • ChiTown Princess

Did the Beckys chill when Chris Brown beat Rihanna? No they’re still peed at him 4 years later. Did the Beckys chill when Rick Ross put a date r@pe reference in his song and got Reebok to drop him. Just a typical ignoramus who let modern day rap music shrink your brain cells!

  • Jared

The utter-idiocy of this man continues to bemuse me. He truly does not get it does he?

As a PROUD, hard-working, 19 year old, Black male, I sometimes weep at the frame-of-mind of some of my dear people and our, sometimes, persistent, yet subtly sub-concious, glorification of the euro-centric mentality.

When will, some of us, wake up and stop the damning of our own race, especially our own women?

    • ChiTown Princess

At 19 and you’re a young black man, you have more sense then the ignorant brothers out here in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Keep doing you and don’t let anyone change your state of mind.

      • Jared

        Thank you @ChiTownPrincess:disqus

        I appreciate your comment.

I will continue to be strong, work hard and prove myself as a Black man of value and worth, not for the sake of the ‘White man’ and ‘his idea of how we should be in his society’ but for the cause, and bringing forth, of my own people.

  • WhoMe

His teeth look like gravel. Yikes! Its a shame how black men tear down/disrespect black women. What an ignoramus.

    • Chris Phil

      You sound so non-ignorant.

  • Lola

His mother obivously did a piss poor job cause he’s ignorant and doesn’t seem to care.

  • kickash

He just doesn’t get it. It’s not about racism, it’s about colorism that has been a problem in the black community for years. Basically what he’s saying is, “well you’re too dark to be doing that” He says women are being sensitive? It’s not about being sensitive, it’s the constant comparison of light and dark skin people that is so apparent in hip hop. He thinks because he is dark skinned what he said wasn’t stupid, but it was.

    • The statement is even more idiotic because he’s dark-skinned himself. I’m assuming he’s never heard of the term “Internalized Racism”, since learning things of that nature would involve him having to actually buy a book and educate himself. He rather spend money on those rusty a** “Cash4Gold” teeth he’s rocking.

      • Cash for gold?! Hell naw…

      • That was good.

      • Drell Cula

…but it wasn’t like he wasnbashing dark skin. He simply expressed the fact he didn’t think darker brown tones looked good with red lipstick (which I completely disagree with). Don’t you find some color combinations to be unappealing?

  • BoyBye!!

He needs to boycott that grill of his. That ish looks infected.

    • IllyPhilly

      Yes it does.
