If you’ve watched even one episode of ABC’s hit political primetime thriller, Scandal, chances are you’ve “met” Huck, former CIA black ops agent and an employee at Olivia Pope’s crisis management firm. What stands out most about Huck is the complexity of his character. He’s extremely dark, emotionally disturbed, socially awkward, yet loving and compassionate man who finds pleasure in killing people. Of course it takes a stellar actor to nail such a dynamic role and thankfully actor Guillermo Diaz is the perfect man for the job. While most would credit Díaz’ ability to make Huck come alive in such a believable way to his amazing acting skills, during a recent interview with Vulture the New York native revealed that he and Huck share quite a few similarities.

On how he relates to Huck’s characteristics social misfit-like:

“I’m a loner. I like to be alone. I’m socially awkward. I feel like I can relate to Huck in that way. I also love horror movies. I’m really into horror art, so I feel like a dark side in that way. When the attention is on me, off-camera, I get uncomfortable — sort of shy and at a loss for words, as you can probably tell? [Laughs.]”

“Yeah, when I was in high school I wasn’t really popular. I was picked on a lot. And then I did a talent show and kids started to tell me that I did a good job. It was the first time that my peers told me that they liked what I was doing. Something clicked and I knew that this is what I wanted to do.”

On how he prepared for the role as Huck:

“When I first got the script, Huck was described as a much older character than me and he was obsessed with crystalline, and I remember asking, “Why do they see me for this?” My managers were like, “No, they know who you are, just go in.” I think Shonda, she’s so great with casting, she doesn’t have one set type in her head. She brings people in and I don’t think she thought of Huck as he is now, but luckily I brought something to the character that moved her and I helped shape the character.”

On why fans root for Huck:

“He’s broken. He’s emotionally crippled, but at the same time he’s trying to change. We see him torture and kill people, yet we see him struggling with that. He cries over it and wants to be a different man, and I think that’s what people love about him.”

Either way, Díaz nails his role as Huck!

I thought it was me. I love him. But then again I do tend to go for the emotionally unavailable and emotionally effed up kind of men. At least I did. I would be right there trying to fix Huck. Le sigh, I still love you Huck. I just love from afar.

Nothing but love for Guillermo! For the longest, I saw him as Scarface from Half Baked, but now it’s all about Huck!! My absolute fav character on Scandal! I also read that he was openly gay in real life, but felt like he had to hide who he was for years being that he grew up in a tough neighborhood in NY and he’s always being typecast for roles. Love him! Hope to continue seeing him on the big and little screens!
