You’re Doing What Now? 15 Celebrities Who Are Making Strange Career Changes
Jay Z is busy making headlines for his transition from rapper to sports manager. And he’s not the only one making career decisions that make folks scratch their heads. These celebrities are making hard lefts and abandoning their god given talent for…other things.
Does singing love songs in the 90s make you qualified to give love advice in 2013? Apparently Keith thinks so. The R&B crooner is launching a new dating website called True Love Meets. Apparently it has the real answer to the question “who can love you like me?”
According to Straight from the A, Phaedra parks may be moving on from The Real Housewives of Atlanta to become the judge in a new reality court show called Rich People’s Problems.
We know Phaedra’s a lawyer but we thought she hung up her briefcase for her Donkey Booty workout. Maybe losing to Kenya made her re-think her career path.
Guess where Omarosa is taking her nasty attitude next? The pulpit. Apparently she became an ordained Methodist minister about a year ago.
But Omarosa — or Reverend “O” as she likes to be called — isn’t preaching right now. She’s starring in the new season of All Star Celebrity Apprentice. Apparently now that she’s found Jesus she plans to be nicer…So far, no good.
The oldest Simmons sister is apparently branching out from design to acting. Taking to the stage is a mistake for most reality show celebrities. But apparently Vanessa is good — like really good.
Her director Dominga Martin had this to say about her starring role in her new film My First Loves:
“I believe she is this generation’s Diahann Caroll or Dorothy Dandridge. She has range; she’s classy, FRESH and has a quiet strength. She is the image of the character I created in my head. I was searching for someone fresh faced and untainted and Vanessa Simmons is everything I was looking for. She’s got next! I can’t wait to see her blossom and bring this role to life.”
Apparently Fiddy wants to be a boxing manager. But we aren’t the only ones who think this move doesn’t make any sense and he’s having a lot of trouble getting any boxers on his team.
When he tried to sign boxer Adrien Brone, Brone’s manager (and CEO of Golden Boy) had this to say:
“He might be a talented music guy but as a businessman, you have to look at his record. I mean, the Vitamin Water, that was like sheer luck. It was not because of his brains he got involved and you look at his record label, how many guys does he still have signed? When did he do his last concert? C’mon, now this guy wants to get into boxing?
Jay-Z is one of the world’s greatest rappers. But his baseball management career is another story. Roc Nation Sports may have signed its first baseball player — Major League Baseball player Robinson Cano. But a lot of people think that Jay’s new move will be short lived.
An anonymous source threw this shade J’s way in the Daily News:
“Jay-Z doesn’t know S–t about baseball. You don’t hire a real estate agent to do neurosurgery.
“Can you imagine the hardline negotiations that will take place when Jay-Z walks into (Yankee president) Randy Levine’s office with that Yankee hat he’s always wearing and says his client wants to play with the Dodgers?
“Celebrity in baseball comes from performance, but Robinson is looking at Jay-Z and Beyonce to make him a celebrity. He is being naïve. The story now is about Jay-Z, not Robinson.”
Apparently Lupe Fiasco is going to become an app developer. He recently became the creative director of a new health app called Higi. And he’s taking the job pretty seriously. Lupe told Billboard Biz:
‘This is like my normal job,’ he says. ‘I’m still doing the rapper thing, but I got a legit 9 to 5 now.”
But the journalist came away from the interview with the idea that Lupe may be letting his rap career take a back seat to his tech ambitions:
“Lupe is already hard at work on his next record . . . but Higi will take priority over his creative projects.”
Seeing as the Real Housewives of Atlanta may be a big part of what broke up her marriage we thought Porsha’s reality show days were over. But it sounds like Porsha is planning on going back on TV.
Rumor has it that one of the reasons Porsha’s marriage fell apart was arguments over whether or not she would return to Season 6 of RHOA. Now that she’s planning to go on the show full time, it sounds like she bailed on her marriage in exchange for a career as a reality star.
Apparently Tyrese wants to counsel women with relationship advice. Really? Lets all remember that this is the man who gave this callous advice to overweight people:
“No two situations are the same. If you are fat and nasty and you don’t like the way you look, do something about it. It’s simple. When you take a shower and you put your fat, nasty body in the shower and by the time you get out, the mirrors are all steamed up so you don’t look at what you did to yourself. That may sound offensive or insensitive but ultimately, you are big as h*ll because you have earned that Shyte. You worked your a** off to eat everything in sight to get big as h*ll.”
“If you got a problem with the way you look, then you need to do something about it. Excuses sound best to the people that’s making them up.”
Aren’t counselors supposed to be supportive — and give good advice? Tyrese fails on both counts.
Guess what yet another Real Housewives of Atlanta star is planning on producing? Another workout tape. Don’t we have enough of these already? There’s no word yet on whether Sheree will go through the same production company as Kenya and Phaedra. Hopefully nobody will come to blows over this one.
Khloe & Lamar
One Kardashian may be making a move from reality star to felon. Apparently Khloe & Lamar’s charity Cathy’s Kids hasn’t been using the money it raised to cure cancer. According to an investigation, 0% of the money they raised went to cancer research:
Eight years ago, Lamar Odom started the charity Cathy’s Kids which was set up to raise money for cancer research. Both Lamar and Khloe Kardashian advertise for the fund on their respective websites and have had fundraisers for the charity and have used it as their charity of choice when mentioning the good things they do for people.
ESPN has discovered that in the eight years of its existence, exactly $0 has gone to any cancer entity. So, the question is where is all the money? Did it go to Lamar’s fashion line? Maybe Khloe has it. The records show that of the $2.2M raised, 60% went to finance two basketball teams for kids who travel around the country playing. Another $70K a year or so goes to Lamar’s best friend as a salary although it is not clear exactly what he does.
At 34, Tom Cruise’s ex-wife has decided that she wants to be an attorney. Her most recent play Dead Accounts just tanked and when asked what her next move would be she announced that she’ll be studying law. But seeing as Katie Holmes has yet to attend college, she won’t be ready to take the bar until she’s 42.
The former Playboy Bunny, girlfriend of Hugh Hefner and Peep Show star says that she’s done taking of her clothes for money. Now that she’s pregnant she’s starting to think about her self image. She told The Bump:
“I want my daughter to be proud of me and look up to me. I think early on in my pregnancy I realized that to be the mom I want to be, I had to change my life, and that’s what I’m doing.”
Holly’s new career? A homemaker. She plans on marrying her baby’s father who’s apparently never heard the warnings about turning hussies into housewives.
Apparently Taylor Swift says she’s “conquered” singing and plans to go into acting.
A source close to Taylor told OK! Magazine:
”Taylor has wanted to be a movie star ever since she was a child. She started acting lessons when she was nine and has never forgotten her original dream.”
Acting didn’t work out for her then and it isn’t working out now. She was recently passed over for a role in Les Miserables even though we already know she can sing. But that isn’t stopping Taylor. She says she plans to pursue her acting dreams full time once she finishes touring her album Red. Good luck girl.
Apparently the “Just a Friend” rapper is trying his hand at cooking. He recently offered a deal on Living Social where he teaches clients to cook healthily. We never would have guessed that this was Biz Markie’s future. But Biz seems confident in his cooking skills. There are even rumors that he may soon be starting a cooking show.
