Nineteen-year-old Analouisa Valencia, an African-American and Latina lesbian, is looking forward to competing in the Miss South Carolina contest in July.

The current Miss Lyman, who has been out since the ninth grade, is hopeful that a Miss South Carolina pageant victory will lead her to Miss America, as The Advocate notes in an exclusive interview.

The Spartanburg native beauty queen, who has been with girlfriend Tamyra Bell for three years, started competing in pageants over a decade ago. In 2000, she won Miss South Carolina Princess for Miss Spartanburg.

A singer and advocate for people with special needs, she’s been working with Special Olympics South Carolina since she was 8.
