With shows like TLC’s The Sisterhood and We TV’s Mary Mary, I suppose the question of whether or not there is a place for gospel artists and Christian ministers in the world of reality television has been answered. The latest singer to join the ranks of gospel artists on reality television is 1/4 of Grammy Award-winning gospel group, The Clark Sisters, Karen Clark Sheard.
Starring side-by-side with Karen in the BET reality series entitled, The Sheards will be her husband, Bishop John Drew Sheard, daughter and singer, Kierra Sheard and her music producer son, J.Drew Sheard. Judging by the recently released trailer, J.Drew could certainly be the show’s breakout star. He appears to be pursuing a lifestyle that is drastically different from and a little conflicting with the values of his devout Christian family. During the teaser, he can be seen partying it up and mingling with a slew of different women. He also expresses his desire to break away from church and explore the world that awaits outside of the sanctuary doors.
“I’m sick of the church. The world is so much bigger than that,” he tells his mother during one scene.
Of course, Karen was not playing that and quickly orders him to take back his statement.
“Oh you ain’t gonna say that in front of me. That I won’t allow,” she reacts, clearly thrown off by her son’s statement.
Kierra appears to be at somewhat of a crossroad as well. Her brother J.Drew is known for producing a lot of her music, but in one scene, Rodney Jerkins informs the 24-year-old singer that her younger brother may not be the best person to continue producing her projects. This has the potential to cause a bit of a rift, as the Sheards appear to be very family oriented. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what the outcome will be. Kiki recently took to her Twitter page to express her excitement about the upcoming show.
I wonder if any of the other Clark sisters will be making cameos on the show.
