14 Women Who Have Been Through The Fire, To The Limit, And To The Wall With Men
Relationships are never easy but for these celebrity women cupid has been just a smidge more brutal. Whether they were subjected to cheating boyfriends or unappreciative mates, these famous ladies have been through the wringer when it comes to their love lives. Sure, some finally found happiness, but we’re sure the scars from their early lovers will never quite disappear.
Mary J. Blige
Mary J. Blige may have been singing about “No More Drama,” but unfortunately this hip-hop songstress’ love life has been chock full of it. Blige certainly didn’t have it easy growing up in the Bronx, battling with an abusive relationship with Jodeci band member K-Ci and, later, drug abuse, and the strife continued in her marriage to record producer Kendu Isaacs. The fiercely private Blige has kept most marital woes under wraps, but when rumors leaked that she and her husband had gotten into a fight at a nightclub, she told Wendy Williams, “I would be a liar and my fans would hate me if I said to them, oh we’re perfect and everything is great. We have situations just like everyone else; it’s real. But we love each other, that’s it.”
The first of many women whose relationships took a nosedive once cheating rumors started swirling, Monica bid farewell to her then fiancée, Atlanta-based rapper Rocko. The two, who had been together, on and off, for close to 10 years had two children before ultimately calling it a quits. But we have to give major props to Monica for keeping it civil, tweeting out:
“Thank you everyone for all the love your sending. @Rocko4Real is a great father and we will continue to love and parent our children . The rest is a private matter between @Rocko4Real and I. He is a good person. We all make mistakes. Even seperated we will always be family…”
Unfortunately, that situation wasn’t the first of Monica’s relationship woes. In July 2000, her then-boyfriend Jarvis Weems asked her to come to the cemetary where his brother was buried and when she got there he refused to unlock the car doors and then shot himself in front of her. Thankfully, she’s now found love with baller Shannon Brown. Can’t get much better in the happy ending department.
We’re not sure much of an explanation is needed for this one, but Tina Turner was subjected to everything under the dark sun in her marriage to Ike Turner. Though some of the scenes in “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” were exaggerated, there is no denying the sheer horror and the level of abuse that Turner was subjected to for years. But she emerged bigger, brighter and stronger than anyone could have imagined. And she even managed to find a man to treat her right, music producer Erwin Bach. While the two aren’t officially married, they have been each other’s rock for more than 25 years.
Another woman who has been to hell and back when it comes to her love life, Halle Berry married baseball star David Justice, but the couple’s union was short-lived. With allegations of abuse floating around, the marriage ultimately came to an end. Berry would later say that she contemplated suicide after the break up. That union would be followed by Berry’s marriage to R&B singer Eric Benet, which was also disastrous. Benet, who was clearly out of his mind, cheated on one of the most beautiful women in the world repeatedly during their marriage, leading to their unceremonious divorce. And as if that wasn’t enough, she also shacked up with Gabriel Aubrey, and rumors have swirled for years that she’s deaf in one year as a result of her relationship with Wesley Snipes early in her career.
We all know how that turned out.
Here’s to hoping that Berry finally finds love and happiness with new beau Olivier Martinez.
Mariah Carey might not be the first celebrity you think of when it comes to those who have been unlucky in love, but trust us, MiMi hasn’t had it easy. When she was barely out of her teens, she married music czar Tommy Mottola. He wasted no time in strong-arming the impressionable songstress to do whatever he thought was in her career’s – and his – best interests. The extent of his emotional abuse over Carey, undoubtedly scarred the young singer, and maybe explains some of her erratic behavior throughout the years. After far too long, the couple divorced and Carey married and procreated with Nick Cannon. Not the biggest step up, but a step up nonetheless. Kudos.
The death of the Notorious B.I.G. remains one of music’s most baffling and tragic tales in hip-hop. But what is equally as awful is that his beautiful former wife, singer Faith Evans, was left behind. Though the two certainly had their share of ups and downs, particularly with Biggie’s penchant for the ladies, there was no denying the love between the two, even after Evans moved on with record executive Todd Russaw. As if that heartbreak wasn’t enough, Evans’ relationship with Russaw would also meet its end. Will she finally find love? Maybe 2013 is the year.
The rumor mill has been constantly churning when it comes to Keyshia Cole and her love life. Since getting hitched to NBA player Daniel Gibson, and particularly after the two went the reality show route, rumors have swirled about marital strife, but unfortunately Keyshia is no stranger to relationship strife. When she first came on the scene she was on the rebound from a messy relationship which fueled the sad love songs on her first album. And when she dated rapper Young Jeezy, things didn’t end on the best note when it was rumored that she proposed and he declined. As of Valentine’s Day though, things seem to be on the up and up with Boobie.
Sure lots of our listees have dealt with their significant other’s wandering eye, but few can be lumped in the same category as Elizabeth Hurley. While dating English actor Hugh Grant, Hurley was delivered a fantastically terrible blow: Grant had cheated on her … with a horribly unfortunate looking prost1tute. And though Hurley stood by her man, it was only a matter of time before she had enough. The two split “amicably,” and thankfully, Hurley moved on and has yet to find another man dumb enough to pull that kind of street walking stunt. And, in case you were wondering, she is still ridiculously hot. You’ve been warned, fellas.
Another celeb whose significant other deserves a spot in the Moron Hall of Fame is Sandra Bullock, who definitely got the short end of the relationship stick with motorcycle man Jesse James. The odd couple tied the knot, but of course James was outed as having a serious problem keeping his pants on. Rampant allegations of cheating ultimately led to the two getting a very ugly, very public divorce. Though Bullock has yet to walk down the aisle again, she does have another, way more wonderful, man in her life: Her adopted son Louis Bardo.
Once again, physical abuse creeps into our list. Reality mainstay K. Michelle claimed that during her relationship with music head Memphitz, she was assaulted. And then if that wasn’t bad enough, Memphitz filed a lawsuit against her. Of course if that drama wasn’t enough, K. Michelle took things to a cringe-worthy level when she started telling everyone and their mother how much she wanted former flame J.R. Smtih back: “I want to say what women won’t say. I’m tired of all the cookie-cutter stuff. So, sometimes you just wanna f**k. Every time I think about something sexual in my life, I think about a certain guy. His name’s J.R.”
Girl, we feel for you, but come on, let’s try subtly, OK?
Jennifer Lopez has certainly had a rocky road to love over the years. Her first marriage to restauranteur Ojani Noa went up in flames less than a year after the nuptials and the two have been all about the back and forth court battling ever since. Then we had J. Lo and P. Diddy, which of course culminated in a nice little run in with the police. And then there was Bennifer and the “Gigli” disaster. And we can’t forget her marriage to Puerto Rican crooner Marc Anthony. Though the union ushered in Lopez’s twins, Max and Emme, the couple parted ways, leaving Lopez on the prowl once again. For the time being she is shacking up with dancer Casper Smart. Any bets on how long this one will last?
The former “Desperate Housewives” beauty has certainly had her share of traumatic romantic experiences. Her first marriage to actor Tyler Christopher didn’t pan out, but her union to Tony Parker turned out much, much worse. After three years of marriage the two ended their union after rumors of Parker’s infidelity began to circulate. And to add insult to injury: One of Parker’s squeezes seemed to be the wife of a former teammate. Not sure you could get too much lower. All Longoria was left with was an ill-advised tattoo she got in honor of Parker … which she promptly got removed. Though she’s still struggled to find love, we are confident it is only a matter of time before she finds Mr. Right.
You’d think someone as beautiful and bold as Ms. Tyra Banks would have no problems finding love. That, however, has not been the case. In her 20s, Banks found herself in a relationship with an emotionally abusive and manipulative man. As she explained to Oprah, “I stayed because I felt like if I left and he didn’t change and didn’t treat me how I felt I deserved to be treated, I was a failure.” Luckily Banks found the strength to leave that situation, but unfortunately hasn’t found her fairytale romance quite yet. Come on, boys, what are you waiting for?
This one doesn’t even need an explanation. Jennifer Aniston married one of the most attractive men in the world, only to have him leave her for his equally attractive co-star. Then she got sucked into John Mayer’s evil relationship web. It was about time Aniston found comfort in the arms of a stand-up guy.
