Drama From Your Mama — And Daddy! Celebrity Parents Whose Foolishness Has Outshined Their Kids
Many of us love to follow celebrity drama, but it’s not always the stars themselves who captivate us. Sometimes it’s the star’s parents, who in these instances have achieved their own measures of fame thanks to their crazy antics, opinions, and scandals. Which moms and dads made the list? Click through to find out!
For years the only thing we really knew about Matthew Knowles was that he was the manager of Destiny’s Child and father of Beyoncé. But in 2009, when actress Alexsandra Wright came forward alleging that she had had an affair with Matthew and was carrying his child (which paternity tests proved to be true), we learned a whole lot more about the man – and so did his family. Needless to say, the tabloids had a field day reporting on his divorce from Tina Knowles, and speculating on reasons why he no longer held his position as Beyoncé’s dadager.
Ever since news broke that Jessica Simpson’s parents were divorcing, her father, Joe, has become a fixture in the tabloids. One week he’s involved in a gay cheating scandal, and the next he’s blowing big money on a Mexican vacation – money taken from a joint bank account he still happens to hold with his estranged wife, by the way.
Joe may be newly famous, but I’d recommend that he take a seat somewhere to avoid further negative press and screwing up his divorce settlement proceedings.
Jane Etta Pitt
A few months before the 2012 presidential election, Jane Etta Pitt declared her support for Mitt Romney in a fiery anti-gay/anti-abortion letter that bashed Obama and his religious beliefs. Jane then took it about ten steps further and condemned those Christians who planned on not voting for Romney – strong statements that left many us scratching our heads: one, because of the randomness (who knew Jane was such a right-wing nutjob?); and two, because Brad Pitt is one of the most vocal supporters of gay marriage in Hollywood.
Jane’s comments resulted in near-instant Twitter backlash, making her name a trending topic in seconds.
When Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is aired no one was expecting that Keyshia’s mother, Frankie, would outshine darn near everybody and become her own celebrity. Since that time, we, along with the media, have followed Frankie through her ups and downs – in rehab and out.
In 1997, Nancy Dow famously made fun of her daughter Jennifer Aniston, and in 1999 Dow made headlines again for writing a tell-all book about their strained relationship, entitled From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir. Despite the title, Dow and Aniston would not even almost become “friends” until around 2005, when Aniston and Brad Pitt divorced.
Kris Jenner’s job may be to manage her famous children, but that doesn’t mean she’s opposed to being famous herself. And with juicy scandals constantly coming out of the woodwork (her cheating on Robert Kardashian and Bruce Jenner, Khloe not being a Kardashian) Kris has ensured her place in the spotlight – for the moment anyway.
I don’t know which role Dina Lohan has failed worse in: being a manager or being a mom. The 50-year old continues to make headlines for partying with Lindsay, discussing her addictions with media outlets, and otherwise capitalizing on her family’s dysfunction. Dina once went so far as to bring cameramen to film Lindsay in drug rehab, against Lindsay and the facility staff’s wishes.
And Lindsay’s father Michael is definitely no better. Between the highly publicized jail visits and rehab stays, he too has become famous for his own brand of dysfunction.
Debra Antney is way more than just Waka Flocka Flame’s mom and momager. She’s the founder of Mizay Entertainment, a well-established company through which she’s managed the likes of Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj and even Heidi Montag. Debra has become better known in recent years for scandal: sources once alleged that she was running a prostitution ring, and TV appearances: she was featured on Love and Hip Hop ATL.
Joe Jackson has been famous since the late 80’s, when stories first abounded that he was physically and emotionally abusive toward his children. After that, it came out that he had cheated on wife, Katherine, numerous times, and since then Joe has regularly been in the news for one controversial thing or another — like selling Michael Jackson perfume in the mall.
In 2011, Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky and her father Carl got into an all-out brawl with America’s Next Top Model contestant Bianca Golden and her mother Elaine in a Turks and Caicos airport. Details of the fight were unclear… and ratchet. Both sides claimed that the other threw racial slurs, but neither side seemed certain as to who threw them first. In the end, Elaine had to be hospitalized while Nikki, Bianca, and Carl were each arrested.
