Just Can’t Wait: What We Want To Know About The New R&B Divas

Unexpectedly, I became a fan of the R&B Divas in Atlanta. Unlike most reality tv shows featuring casts comprised of mostly women, the R&B Divas had disagreements but they never resulted in blows or bottles being thrown. There was no physical drama but the show was never boring. So I’m happy to see that TV One is expanding the franchise and hiring a whole new cast for LA. We already told you who’s going to be on the show but here’s what we’re looking forward to learning and seeing from each cast member.

Angie Stone,

Angie Stone

Of course we don’t want to dwell in the past, but we must know about Angie’s relationships. Not only was Angie famously involved with soul singer D’Angelo, she was also married to and has a daughter with Lil’ Rodney C! from Funky Four Plus One More. So we definitely want the tea behind all of that. Living in the present, it’s rumored that Angie Stone is engaged now. So we need to see how that relationship is progressing. Especially since this fiancé has two children of his own. It’ll be interesting to see how they’re blending their families.

LaTocha Scott

It’s funny that “R&B Divas” would be where LaTocha would land. Last year, there were rumors that LaTocha would be joining the reality show on Vh1. It looks like TVOne had a better offer. LaTocha has kept her name pretty scandal-free over the years. But in an interview with Rolling Out last year, she did allude to the fact that when she was with Xscape they had to run everything through Jermaine Dupri and there were often differences of opinion. Considering that she recently showed up at the So-So Def reunion, I doubt there’s any beef but I’d like to hear a few behind the scenes secrets. For instance, her sister Tamika said that when Xscape first got together, she got pregnant by her then boyfriend/now husband. Tamika told youthoutlook.org: “The group was saying I should have an abortion. Either have my abortion or don’t stay in the group. I chose to have my baby. God blessed me.” In addition to those stories from the past, we want to know how she’s faring in the music industry now.

Claudette Ortiz

Of all the new cast members, Claudette, the lone girl in the R&B group City High, has the most interesting back story. If you haven’t kept up with her over the years, as most of us probably haven’t, allow me to fill you in. Now, you may remember that City High was comprised of three members:  Robbie Pardlo, Ryan Toby and Claudette.  Two years ago, Claudette told SheIsNYC.com that before the group was formed she dated Robbie Pardlo, despite her sister warning her that he had a drinking problem. Pardlo’s drinking problem made for a violent relationship. (Claudette described one incident where Pardlo through a brush at her but she ducked. Pardlo had thrown it with so much force though, it ended up getting stuck in a door. ) The two were broken up before the City High album was finished. A year later, Claudette started dating her other group member Ryan Toby. (You may remember him as the boy from Sister Act.) The couple had two sons together before they married. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t work out and they divorced before Claudette met the man who would become the father of her daughter.

That’s a lot and a lot of material for her to discuss and explain on R&B Divas. So juicy.

Michel’le

You might not recognize Michel’le’s name but you certainly know her hit song, “Something In My Heart.” Furthermore, if you’re a Hip Hop historian you may know that Michel’le once dated Dr. Dre and became the mother of his child. Then after that she married the infamous Suge Knight. Michel’le has admitted that her marriage to Knight was not really about love but more about her taking over the company once he no longer could manage it. Messy. Being intimately involved with two of the most influential names in Hip Hop obviously yields all types of insane stories. We can’t wait for her to share with the rest of the Divas. And hanging around with the boys all the time, she might be a little rough around the edges. We’ll see. I expect her to be one of the more entertaining cast members.

Chante Moore

Every time I hear Chante Moore’s name, I sing “Chante’s got a man at home.”  Unfortunately, that man is not Kadeem Hardison, her first ex husband and father of her daughter Sophia, or fellow R&B singer Kenny Lattimore. Her second ex husband. 🙁 I always thought they were cute together. I have to know, at least a little bit about why they couldn’t make it work.

Lil Mo

Like many of the R&B Divas, Lil Mo has been severely underrated in her career. And despite her immense talent, she’s been kind of low key these days. After a divorce, she’s also raising a blended family with her second husband, gospel artist Phillip Bryant. I don’t know why but something about Lil Mo always came off as super spunky. I expect her to be like Monifah, if only for the fact that they both have a love of colored hair.

Kelly Price

Kelly Price is probably the most low-key accomplished artist in the bunch. The singer with gospel roots was discovered by Mariah Carey, sang background for Whitney Houston and wrote or collaborated with some of music’s biggest names, including everyone from Jay-Z to Elton John. Ask about her. It’ll be interesting to see how she interacts personally and not just professionally.

Dawn Robinson

Let me just say that I expect Dawn to turn this show all the way out. Whether it was EnVogue or Lucy Pearl, rumor has it that Dawn just doesn’t “work well with others.” Take for instance her very public beef with former EnVogue members, Cindy and Terry. Dawn and fellow member Maxine left EnVogue to form their own group. Cindy and Terry are currently trying to sue them. Hopefully, Dawn will address all that madness on the show. We might even see personality quirks that contributed to its dissolution.

In case you missed the cause of the drama between the EnVogue ladies, check out the exchange Dawn and Maxine had on Twitter.

Sad to see what was once such a classy go out this way. Either way, what are you expecting from the new season? Who do you expect to be the most interesting and the most confrontational?
