They may be known for working the runway, smiling for the camera or performing for millions of fans, but when these 15 celebrities wipe off the make-up and step away from the flashing lights, they are simply known as ‘Grandma’ and ‘Grandpa.’
In addition to being a reality television star, NeNe Leakes has added two primetime shows to her resume but is now prepared for another big role in her life: grandmother. Leakes’ oldest son Bryson welcomed baby girl Bri’asia in mid-June of 2012 giving the mother of two a granddaughter to play dress-up with. The “New Normal” star said, “I always wanted to have a girl and now I have one! She’s just adorable. Forty is the new 30. I’m a sassy, fashion-forward grandma!”
Actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg became a mother at the age of 18 and a grandmother at 34-years old when her daughter Alexandrea gave birth to her first child. Goldberg, now a grandmother of three, doesn’t expect her family to grow anytime soon. “I made it clear that should the oldest one decide that was a good possibility, that I would yank her tubes out with my bare hands,” the daytime television talk show host joked. “I accepted the grandmother thing in my thirties, but great-grandchildren I’m not doing!”
Funny man Jim Carrey relishes his role as proud grandfather to Jackson, who just turned 3 on February 26. The “Bruce Almighty” star gushes about what Jackson is like and how he felt about being a grandfather for the first time. “When it happened, oh my gosh, it was just like an explosion of pure bliss,” said Carrey. “He is the coolest dude on earth, unless he gets tired and then he’s a marauding maniac. He’s so clued in and we play soccer together and he’s really coordinated, it’s amazing… I’m the grandfather that wants to improve him and stuff like that. ‘Start reading to him right now! While he’s playing soccer! He must be a super being!'”
Goldie Hawn looks forever young but the 67-year-old actress is actually a grandmother of four boys. The “Bird On A Wire” star talked about the term ‘grandmother’ (oldest grandson Ryder calls Hawn ‘Gogo), saying,”We could think ‘grandmother’ and think it’s really old — or actually much younger. I just rip those titles away. I love being a grandmother. When I was pregnant I knew the exact right thing to do, having a baby, and I feel exactly the same about being a grandmother.”
2010 was a great year for Cee Lo Green. The self-proclaimed lady killer snagged four Grammy nominations including “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” but perhaps his greatest joy that year came with the new title as “grandfather.” The Goodie Mob singer’s step-daughter from a previous marriage welcomed a healthy baby boy. Green made the surprising admission on E!’s “Chelsea Lately” simply stating, “I’m a grandfather. I’m 35. She had a son so I have a grandson.”
Singer Lionel Richie is known for his sultry ballad songs but when he’s around his grandchildren, he’s known as ‘Pop Pop.’ Richie became a grandfather when his daughter, former reality star Nicole Richie, gave birth to Harlow Winter Kate Madden in 2008 and son Sparrow James Midnight Madden in 2009. “They always figure out their own name,” Richie said of his grandchildren. “I thought G-Pa might have been really the right thing but, no, no ‘Pop Pop,’ is and, by the way, they melt me when they walk in the door.”
Chaka Khan may be every woman but she is also a fabulous grandmother. The legendary singer and mother of two thought her job raising children was a thing of the past until she had to step in and take care of her granddaughter. The “Through The Fire” singer was awarded permanent custody of her granddaughter Daija Jade Holland a little over a year ago by the courts after it was deemed her parents were not able to provide adequate care for her due to substance abuse.

Alexis had two children via surrogate mother that are a year and a day apart: daughter Jude was born on March 8, 2011 and her baby brother Truman was born on March 9, 2012.
Tony Danza looks like he hasn’t aged much since his first acting gig on “Taxi” but the man with the boyish looks is actually a grandfather. The “Who’s The Boss” star was at the hospital when his grandson Nicholas arrived into the world on August 27, 2005. Danza spoke of the experience, which left him elated. “To watch my son come down and cut the cord and give the baby a bath,” Danza gushed, “It’s got me bouncing around, not touching the ground.”
Tom Hanks has had a long, storied career in Hollywood, but becoming a grandfather has been one of the greatest joys of his life. Son Colin Hanks and his wife welcomed Olivia Jane in February of 2011. The Academy Award winning actor was excited to talk about his granddaughter, who he calls “magnificent,” to David Letterman. “I’m the big guy, I’m not her dad or mom,” said Hanks. “I yell, ‘Who’s that little girl? Who’s that little girl? I know you. You’re so cute, Who’s that little girl?’ And she’s not ready — I just don’t see her enough. I’m just this weird, ogre-like guy.”

Kate Capshaw is best known for her role as Willie Scott in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” where she met her future husband, director Steven Spielberg. Before meeting Spielberg, the actress gave birth to her daughter Jessica Capshaw who has now made her a grandmother three times over. The younger Capshaw, who currently plays Dr. Arizona Robbins on “Grey’s Anatomy,” credits her successful career on her mother’s sage advice on family first: “You need to build a life and then you have to go off and do your job.”
Dr. Phil McGraw is know for giving expert advice about love and relationships but he can also dole out words of wisdom for grandparents as well because he is one himself. The television therapist is a granddaddy two times over. Jay McGraw, who is the executive producer for “The Doctors” and his wife Erica welcomed a daughter in 2010. On September 1, 2011 the couple’s family grew again after Erica gave birth to a boy on Dr. Phil’s 61st birthday.
