Black screenwriters and directors are no longer waiting for the stars to align, prompting Hollywood to give them a big break and a chance at being the next Spike Lee or Salim Akil. Instead, they’re taking what’s theirs and gaining national attention by pooling together the resources they do have, creating their own platforms and producing the thought-provoking content that our culture currently lacks. For a long time, the idea of a web series left many rolling their eyes as they envisioned low quality video footage, bad acting and poor scripts, but the black web series has evolved and that simply isn’t the case anymore. Today, we have the privilege of choosing from an array of quality web series with amazing scripts, talented actors and actresses, and plots so engaging that they leave some of the biggest skeptics scouring the web trying to find out when the next episode is going to drop. We all know and love Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl series, but there are plenty more amazing shows floating around the web. Check out these 10 black web series that you should most certainly consider giving a try.

roomieloverfriends

Hands down, roomieloverfriends is my absolute favorite web series on the ‘net right now. The comedic plot documents the awkward relationship between roommates, Tamiko and Jay, whose relationship gets quite complicated once they find themselves in bed together one evening. The show is a product of Black & S*xy TV, creators the of popular independent film, A Good Day to Be Black & S*xy.

The Unwritten Rules

This hilarious web series is actually based on the book, 40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule: The Diary of a N*gg*r, Negro, Colored, Black, African-American Woman. The storyline centers around Racy and her experiences as the only black employee working in a predominately white company. Although the series tackles some pretty raw and real-life issues that blacks face when dealing with their often clueless co-workers, the comedic relief that it adds to the everyday experiences is unmatched.

The Couple

Another production of Black & S*xy TV, The Couple hilariously explores universal issues that almost every couple has experienced at some point or another. Due to the popularity and success of this highly relatable series, there is actually a The Couple movie in the works.

There’s also one called Stirred, Not Shaken, it’s like a black soap opera. It’s VERY messy and scandalous and I like the way they incorporate music in the show.
