A fun something for Monopoly fans…

The game of high stakes real estate and big bucks has announced a new token — the cat. Out goes the iron, sent directly to jail without passing Go.

The change is the result of a fan vote, with people from 120 countries voting online to determine which of the player pieces would be ousted, says the AP (via USA Today). The nearly 80-year-old game’s tokens include Scottie the dog, a shoe, a hat, and the one that was always the favorite in my house, the car.

Voting closed just before midnight Tuesday. Below is a short clip from Monopoly makers, Hasbro, to announce the decision. A  diamond ring, a helicopter, a guitar, and a robot were some of the other new possibilities.

Also according to the AP, other companies used the “Save Your Token Campaign” as a way to promote their own goods. For instance, Ames True Temper, a garden tool company in Pennsylvania, started its own campaign to save the wheelbarrow. Clever.

You have a few more months to buy a version of the board game with the iron still included. It may be a collector’s item by next year.
