When you open the gates of conversation with Denzel Washington, there’s a chance he might say something that’ll make you say, “Well, alright now!”

During a recent trip to London to promote his most recent film, Flight, Denzel spoke with The Guardian about his role and how he got into the business.  As they further discussed his character and his relationship with God, the reporter noted that it must be interesting to be a Christian actor (as Denzels says he is) living in a place like Hollywood.  That clearly piqued his interest because he told the reporter he was confusing the glitz and glamour ( and bs) of Hollywood with the city of Los Angeles. He continued:

“But actually, even within the industry, I don’t have any actor friends. My friends are old friends. One’s an ex-music guy, the other’s a restaurant owner and the other’s an ex-pro ballplayer.”

That’s not even the good part. Here’s what he had to say about why he doesn’t have any actor friends:

“Because I don’t make friends! Maybe I’m not a butt-kisser, maybe I’m not a schmoozer. I’m not about to go to a party to try to get a job. And then when you have children, the other friends become other parents. We’d coach baseball or basketball. My wife and I were raised right. I don’t want movie-star friends. And being African American, there were no big movie stars to hang out with anyway, not when I was starting out, they were just the third guy from the back! For whatever reason, I never befriended any white actors.”

Listen, when you’re an actor’s actor and can transform yourself into any role given to you, it seems you are able to fully be yourself when you’re not working and everyone will just deal with it.   He is not here for the shenanigans that he’s known since the 80s that the entertainment industry brings. He wants no parts of it and it clearly hasn’t bothered any directors because he’s held down a job since about 1983.

But Denzel knows that he’s major…right? I mean, the ladies have been loving him since…maybe A Soldier’s Story? Well, he doesn’t subscribe to the whole celebrity thing either:

“I’m a working actor! What’s a celebrity anyway? Paris Hilton’s a celebrity. I’m just a working actor.”

Indeed.  I wonder will his daughter Olivia, who he took as his date to the Golden Globes Awards to seemingly introduce her to the other movers and shakers of the industry, have the same attitude if she reaches a certain level of success.

What do you think of Denzel’s comments?

Always been a Denzel fan, and I’m loving how real he is keeping it. Sad to say but real talent USED to reign supreme. That is now an exception, not the majority.

    *applauds*

  • ammergene

    Amen to everything he said.

  • Ann

    That’s my BOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • scandalous7

he doesnt have to, he is already at the top

  • Plumbline

When your on the top of the world, having wealth, success, and fame, that is a place few of us christians have had to be in, where vice, lusts, temptations, and seduction have destroyed many at the top. I hope he makes it without falling, and God Bless him……..great actor by the way……….in the world, but not of it………

    …….2 Corinthians 6:14-15……..

……..14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?

That’s right! It IS possible to be Christian and be in entertainment, but it’s difficult. Being surrounded by so much corruption. You have to be led and spiritually strong to do so and we see his favor with God. Denzel will continue to get acting jobs because he is favored by God.

      • john

“favored by God”. I guarantee he doesn’t believe that. God has nothing to do with it. Mr.Washington worked hard to get where he is. I suppose those actors who don’t get work are ignored by God. Which makes either you a moron or God a prick. Probably both

  • GalaxyEmpress

My man!!!! Gotta love Denzel Washington…..

  • yeppers

I LOVE IT!!! hes being real…LA is so superficial/fake….and everyone is lying/embellishing about what they are doing to Shmooze and kiss up and party in the VIP and at the end of the day they have NO CAREERS. People who are really movers and shakers in an industry YOU WILL NEVER SEE OUT AT THE CLUBS EVERY NIGHT OF THE WEEK…and that is if they are truly a talent and sought after in their field. They work and they work on their crafts daily..so they dont have time for that mess. Hes from the school of LET YOUR WORK SPEAK FOR ITSELF…NOT THE FRIENDS I CAN LINK MYSELF TO. #boss

  • Star_studded

A “working actor.” I like that. Very humble comment coming from one if the biggest names in Hollywood.

  • bigdede

What about him and Sam Jackson’s friendship? He was one of the people to talk to him about his drug use. They had a falling out and got cool again. They were both in the same acting class. Also what about Will Smith? There are pics of them hanging out at Denzel’s house. I also guess him and Julia Roberts were really friends. Neither him or Matthew Broderick. Denzel gave an interview saying how he and Matthew became great friends after Glory. At least his wife is friendship with some Hollywood people like Monique.

    • TRUTH IS

      They are acquaintances not “friends”

      • GalaxyEmpress

Yes!! There’s a huge difference between friends and aquaintances, it’s vital to know how to separate them.

        • chclatemilk

Yesss SAY that again! When I was growing up my big sister taught me the difference between a friend and an acquaintance. People you see at school or even get invited to their house or to hang out once in awhile are just acquaintances. People you can TRUST and DEPEND on and who TRUST and DEPEND on you, are friends. Biiiig difference.

          • GalaxyEmpress

Exactly! Thank You for pointing out the difference, heaven knows someone somewhere needs to see this……or needs a reminder.

  • Kelsey

One of the many reasons I respect the man! Mr. Washington is proof that money and fame DOES’NT have to change you.

  • bluekissess

He’s so real that it’s funny. He was honest which people tend to shy away from.

love the realness, so rare these days..

    • TRUTH IS

YASSS, YASSS, YASS…..I love the butt kissing response

    • IllyPhilly

Yes, they could have gotten some better pics though.

Great story with a nice spin! I think Denzel is being honest about who he is and what he is about. You got to love him for his honesty in a world full of fakes and gimmicks.
