Allen Iverson’s Bowling Brawl

When I was in school, if you didn’t love you some Allen Iverson and his bad a** persona, you were a square. And you were probably like a Tim Duncan fan or something dull like that. But way before he was taking the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Championship or selling his own shoe with Reebok, or even playing for the Georgetown Hoyas, he found himself in some big trouble at the peak of his high school basketball career. If you’ve seen the 30 For 30 doc on Iverson, you might know this story by now.  But for those who don’t…While out with friend at a bowling alley in Hampton, Virginia, Iverson and his friends got into a shouting match with a group of young white men after complaints were made that Iverson’s crew was being way too rowdy and loud. When things got out of control, they found themselves in a brawl with the white men that escalated into a melee with everyone in the bowling alley. It was alleged that Iverson possibly hit a woman in the head with a chair during the fight (something he still contests since he says he left as soon as the brawl began) and at 17, he was charged as an adult for “maiming a mob.” He ended up spending just four months of a 15 year sentence (that had 10 years knocked off) in jail after a court of appeals overturned his conviction. He came out, and was immediately recruited for the Hoyas. The rest, is history.
