Yesterday we told you about Prince covering Billboard magazine and how the interview will go in depth about issues with ownership of music and material in the industry, something Prince has battled with for some time now. In an excerpt of that article, the author talks about the private singer creating his own creative lyric videos that he can feed to the people via his own website, and even via YouTube, a big step for the music legend, who is known for keeping his videos and most of his songs off of YouTube in general. I mean seriously, how many times have you found yourself all excited about watching a clip from Purple Rain or an early performance from Prince, only to find that the music had been completely muted? To usher himself into the Internet age on his own terms, Prince has created a new website, 20pr1nc3.com, and on it, has released the official lyric video for his new single, “Screwdriver.” The video is a bit more advanced than most lyrical clips, and you can even see the singer and his all-girl band getting down to the song, having a jam session. Big shout out to the hat he’s wearing, which is in the shape of a lion. Now THAT’S fashion.
The song in itself is a lot of fun. It’s definitely a funky new rock and roll sound that Prince has been working on, but in a way, it certainly reminds me of something that could have been a B-side to the Dirty Mind album, circa 1980. But anyway, it’s just nice to see him back at it putting out new music, because the man is still in his own lane, killing the game. Check out the lyric video below and let us know if you’re feeling it. Enjoy!
