If you don’t follow tennis, you might have missed all the talk about young up-and-coming 19 year-old, Sloane Stephens from the United States.  She is currently the youngest top 40 player on the WTA tour, and turning heads down under at the Australian Open, as she is set to play her mentor, Serena Williams Jan. 22 in the quarterfinals.

Serena recently had some great things to say about Sloane, according to Sports Illustrated. She pictures her becoming the future of U.S. women’s tennis.

“Like I said after the match [in Brisbane], she can be the greatest player,” Williams said after her fourth-round victory at the Australian Open. “It will be another good match and a good opportunity for both of us. Definitely one of us will be in the semifinals, which I think is awesome. So it’s going to be good.”

After her win in the fourth round against Bojana Jovanovski, she is set to crack the top 20 for the first time in her career.

In other news, the Williams sisters have lost in doubles at the Australian Open, which leaves only Serena left on the singles side. We’ll see who wins tonight between Serena and Sloane, but our money is on Serena based off experience. But, we look forward to great things from the young Sloane.

Why can’t she just be the next Sloane or the next great player? No need to pit them against each other

  • Just Peachy!

That was a great match! If Serena had not had the injuries and hurt herself during the match it would have been over for Sloane. I think she is a great player that utilized Serena’s weaknesses to her advantage. She kept her moving during the game and I had gave Serena a little competition during that 2nd & last set. Serena does have a lot of power and some times that can be bad thing if not controlled properly, this is where I think Sloane is good at controlling her power just enough so you don’t give away points.
I was rooting for Serena but now we can root for the underdog Sloane as she is still a black woman. Remember there was some controversy surrounding her even being accepted in the WTA to begin with. Serena sees the potential in her and I am glad that she supports her. i just wish she could of handled her outburst a little bit differently but she had to let of steam the best way she could so what do I know..

    • Yeah I did not like Serena lil outburst. But she’s the queen of tennis I guess she’s allowed to do whatever. She was frustrated that she lost….it is not fun to lose when you are so close.

No. She is not the next Serena Williams, and no other youngster will ever be.
Sloane Stephens is talented but… remember : Serena at the same age already won a Slam and was #1 in the world.
Also, they don’t have the same style of game. But still, I believe Sloane can be the next big thing and she can storm in the Top10 this year and stay there for a long time!
She showed she was mature enough to be at the top.

    p.s : her mom is gorgeous!!!!! 🙂

  • She is not the next serena Williams. Serena is a legend and always will be. Sloane is a rising star with a completely different game and almost as good as serena’s game.
She has a good game, but she only won against Serena, as Serena was injured big time

  • She knocked out Serena….that was a shocker.

  • She knocked out Serena…That was a shock.

Well Sloane won so um… Yeah

    • that was crazy…3-6 7-5 6-4 she is better than I thought. Congrats to her.

  • She hasn’t been on the scene long enough to be as good as Serena. In time, maybe she will.

The next Serena because she is black? They don’t play the same type of game. Serena has a really strong serve, best serve in women’s tennis, Sloane has a decent serve. Serena is a power player whereas, from what I have seen of Sloane, she is a finesse player. Sloane will be a great player but can we stop comparing black athletes to each other?
