Did She Kill It? Listen To Beyonce’s Rendition Of The National Anthem During President Obama’s Inauguration

The “Star Spangled Banner” is one of the most difficult songs to sing, even for the most gifted of singers, but Beyonce was up to the challenge today as she belted out the country’s national anthem during the inauguration of Barack Obama for his second term. Baddie Bey definitely put her own spin on the song as she closed out today’s ceremony, and even news anchors had to remark how each one of today’s performers, from Kelly Clarkson to King/Queen Bey knocked their songs out of the park.

Let’s see if you agree. Check out video of Beyonce’s performance this morning. Did she kill it?

(Also, am I the only one who saw Tina Knowles all up and through Bey’s face before she started singing?)

  • Just saying!!

I was initially going to comment that her rendition was kind of boring…particularly after the last national anthem she sang a few years back. But the news just reported that she lip synced the whole thing so that really doesn’t matter anymore lol

I’ma Bey fan …. she did “ai’ght” … a little lazy with all them low notes if you ask me. J. Hud did better and I’ve yet to see ANYONE top Whitney … *kanye shrug*

OAN: yeah I saw a little of Tina in the facial expression before she started now that you mention it … initially I thought I was watching her “transform” into Sasha Fierce

Actually the National Anthem isn’t that difficult to sing if folks sing in the right key and without all the extra “ooo’s and ahhhh’s”. Anywho, she did better than I expected. I can tell homegirl been taking some serious singing lessons. Kelly Clarkson was great

ahhh she did perfectly! bless, her nerves caught her when she finished though. Looked like she lost where she was going.

I’m not hating. Bey is cool. But this would never beat Jennifer Hudson’s version at the 2009 Super Bowl. Now THAT..gave me chills!

    • keesha

      I absolutely agree!!!

  • stephanie

it sure as h e l l was better than that poop she did at the super bowl in ’04. lawd have mercy…

I usually don’t like Beyonce’s songs and didn’t respect her singing ability until 2004, I think it was, when she sang ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ at the Super Bowl. She’s a very talented singer and deserving of the fame. I just don’t get the visceral hatred people have for her. It reminds me of the way some people hate our president. Just “because”.

    • Just saying!!

I get what you’re saying! I think it was bound to happen because she’s so overexposed. That’s for anybody. Someone who people love can very easily become a pain in the you know what when they get too much exposure all the time. Plus she makes life a little difficult for other great talented entertainers trying to make it because she’s always trying to take every opportunity she can. Not to mention she’s not very sincere :/ She’s a big act. I say that as a huge DC fan who remembers her “REAL” personality. You can’t blame her for any of these things though because she’s just trying to make people like her and stay relevant. But that is why some people dislike her to answer your question lol

      • FromUR2UB

I have to remind myself that we all have those people we just can’t stand. Kim Kardashian is that person for me. She just irritates me! And that stupid expression she always wears… But I think it bugs me that she’s famous just for hanging around famous people. She has no real talent that I know of. She gets an occasional TV role, which feels like some kind of invasion to me because I try to avoid her. I wouldn’t call those roles real acting, though.

  • Shay

I remember when Fantasia sang it and she killed it . I put her performance right up there with Whitney Houston’s who did it the best. Bey was ok. Not bad just ok.

  • ebonyblu

Kelly Clarkson was terrible. Beyonce was okay but no one can sing that song like Whitney.

I only thumbs you down for your opinion of Kelly Clarkson.

  • NeaJ

She did good. But I don’t care who sings that song. No one will ever be able to top Whitney’s version!

Thank you! My fellow Newark sister did it best!!! No question.

When we were really about creating real music and new sounds, a diva was someone who sounded like NO OTHER and was difficult to imitate. I can tell that many of you are younger and don’t know or care to really understand your musical legacy so it’s easy to praise a ho hum singer who, if you pick any decade of the past, would have barely been a back up singer.

I’m not being harsh. Compare anything Beyonce does to Aretha, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billy Holiday, Etta James, and Dinah Washington. Do ANY of those women sound exactly alike? NOPE. Does Beyonce raise the level of the art of using your voici as an instrument which is our legacy? No? The problem is that many of you defending her are unaware of that legacy and it was intended for you to forget. One of the hallmarks of a great singer is when their voice is large enough to sing over an orchestra. There was a time when the singer was simply part of the band, not a standout. Then afterwards they had to have a voice large enough to match the sound. You can hear this with Dinah and Chaka.

Too many today don’t even know what melody is in music or the fact that men once referred to women as ladies. Some even sang about it with an entire orchestra IN the studio. One example is the Temptations in “Just my imagination”. Can the boring singing Chris Brown sing like that, sing about that to a woman? No. Can rappers do this? No. It would be a challenge for many of you to even listen to music made from nothing but real instruments.

So Beyonce as nothing more than a pop singer, not a serious artist whose come to challenge the art with something real to express (she didn’t struggle like the other singer’s did she was well off and comfortable, these other singers saw a lot of hell and thus the music expresses that which is why its so soulful) but is simply a tool of marketing and a cash cow.

The other part of this is that when we did our thing at one time white folks would have to water it down to imitate because they wouldn’t DARE EVER try to sing like us because they knew they couldn’t. This is what Janis Joplin was all about. Listening to us and being bullied she thought she knew our experiences. She imitated us and made millions doing it too. Elvis Presley NEVER acknowledged Big Mama Thornton who recorded it first and better of course, loved to practice with James Brown’s band but Mr. Brown told him “you can’t go on stage with my band man”. When Little Richard recorded his songs it was ALWAYS at the level that Whites couldn’t easily co-opt and run away with.

So, you see that part where Beyonce plays Dina and the Florence Ballard character is pushed aside because her voice, although not as strong or as good is put up front because Whites aren’t intimidated by it? THAT’S what’s up on that stage now. That’s what Bey reps too She looks as close to them as possible, her singing is easy, doesn’t challenge you and doesn’t challenge their perception of how they see themselves. When you wear blonde hair, the singing is just okay and you keep them in mind when you sing, you’re an instant sensation.

What no one is telling yo younger ones who only know mechanical music and mediocre singers is that your Black skin and kinky hair is a reminder that this nation isn’t what it says it is. Your presence here is always challenged because you are the living embodiment of the truth of what America really is and when you express that, especially in music that hits hard (too hard for Whites who live with unearned privilege and can’t handle it) with voices that are deep and resonate with something that they can’t put their hands on because it’s NOT their expression, is something they’ve been wanting to control since we got here.

So successfully, music corporations have gotten our youngest generations to forget all that came before them so that this nation can go forwards in the future and pretend like it never happened. That’s why it’s so foreign to hear a White woman moaning like we do as though the horrors or gang raping, birthing babies from that, the chililng horror of the lynching, the bitterness of justice denied at every turn here and ALWAYS creating the sound/moves/lyrics that are the total opposite of the lies they perpetuate about themselves, about us and what they try to tell everyone else. We protested so easily and we did it by opening our mouths in a way they couldn’t conceive of.

You applaud Beyonce because you don’t know any better. Beyonce is too clueless, too selfish and too spoiled to even know how to relate to that. i want to hear the song of the girl they pushed out of the group. I want to hear the song of the best buddy after she gets tired of being in Bey’s blond spotlight and tells the truth, and I want to hear the song of the other one whose always falling apart. I’m sure there’s more depth there.

I know I’ve gone on and annoyed many of you and not only do I hope you start thinking, I hope that the sun sends down solar flares so powerful that no more computers work so that you’ll be forced to use instruments again and mechanical music is NEVER heard from again. Whites outlawed drums for a reason but they thrived on Congo Square in New Orleans where WE recorded the first rock song and they were shocked.

    • mac

      TL;DR

    • Alicia

Beyonce is Beyonce. I don’t know why people always want to compare her to other singers. She did very well. Moving on….

Dang this is long…. you MUST be off work today.

No offense to you but I could NOT push myself to read all that. Not because you didn’t make a good point, which Im sure you did, but its really late. Im tired, trying to stuff my face, and this was just too much lol. But from what I did read, I have to say I agree with you half way. It isn’t a secret that Beyoncé doesn’t have the voice as our past music legends but at the same time how many of them could put on a show the way she can. The woman is an entertainer and a fantastic one at that so you have to give her props. Same with Chris Brown. The Temptations were amazing but could any of them dance and put on a show like him? No. Not every entertainer has to be the same. Not all of them can have great voices ex: Bey, Rihanna, Ciara, and not all of the great voices can dance: Jill Scott, Badu, Melanie Fiona, Whitney Houston but they are respected and famous in their own right.

  • Miyako

Uh yea, she is clearly lip syncing.

  • Miss Moore

It was fine, I didn’t feel like it was great nor did I feel it was horrible. Kinda forgettable , but good 4 her

  • http://twitter.com/_LuluDeb debbie

i’m just stunned that beyonce is singing and lady gaga is performing at an OFFICIAL white house party…it’s celebrity/hollywood galore there and I don’t know, it’s just weird to me. I have no respect for the music industry (popular music) and hollywood so that is probably why.

    • IllyPhilly

      Plus one

    • Dichu eba realy lub mehSteebie

Whats wrong with Lady Gaga performing? The girl is talented as heck

  • ladylove22

She did ok .. but that deep side part tho !!!! I’m just saying lol

    • bluekissess

Gabby Douglas 2.0 really? MLK day and you didn’t judge her on the content of her performance you judged her side part?

  • divadiva411

IT was crap crap crap…bitch needs to retire

    • keesha

      Rihanna first lol.

  • Aaliyah Noelle

Damn i love her…idgaf…yes I STAN for King Bey

  • CoCo Lee

Bey did good…. But KELLY THO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Omg!!!! She did that!!!

    • scandalous7

I was about to say that exact same thing lol

  • Oh

    Hmm. Look at Joe…

  • Dee

After Kelly Clarkson sang her butt off, I was a little blah about Bey

  • SheBe

I like that Bey didn’t really over do it with unnecessary runs and such. Kelly Clarkson did a BEAUTUMOUS job though!

    • MissK

Am I the only one who heard a lack of control in some of Kelly’s notes??…She did sing her heart out, but nothing is better than Beyonce’s rendition of the anthem at the Super Bowl way back in 2004!

  • thegoodluckpig

She did well but I was more impressed by Kelly Clarkson’s performance

  • Marguerite

    Yes, it was really good

  • inessa

Maybe I’m the only one who sees this like this but I’m saddened that politic has lost his consciousness, his seriousness….why do they hire a stripper/singer to sing there? The politics should not mingle with the pop business!! It#s a shame!! Years ago stripping on stage was a shame for all women and now it is celebrated and they got to be there at one of the most important political evenements of this country. What are all these illiterates doing there? How many books did they read? smh!!Politics has lost his prestige!! What a shame!!

    • SheBe

Where was the stripper? I missed that!

      • inessa

when someone sings in lingerie on stage and dances half naked, poses in panties for magazines, she’s a stripper in my book!!!!

        • Aaliyah Noelle

U talking bout who? Say her name

        • SheBe

I don’t know of any strippers that sing, don’t dance on poles, and serve a philanthropic duty even on a minimal level but I have to say that even as a mediocre fan of Bey her job is to entertain. Most adults take her job at face value – entertainment but I digress. Her job at the moment was to sing the national anthem and as an international celebrity she performed and did. What say you about these teens getting it popping in this parade right now?

          • inessa

Beyonce dances on pole (just go check on youtube) and many strippers help people and their whole family who live off their back! What you can’t understand is that singing at such an inauguration should be an historical moment! it should be something other nations admire and you can’t just choose anyone based on their popularity to do that!! You should choose class, dignity and self respect….I guess I’m just too old school!

            • SheBe

You are right, it is a historical moment. Class, integrity, dignity, and grace should be the embodiment of this event as well as many others where our nation is represented on a world wide platform. What better way to represent that platform than with an international celebrity who is recognizable across all planes. The performers are chosen for their talents and not their entertainment costumes.

              • Just saying!

…and their fame. She’s also one of the most famous celebrities so talent clearly isn’t the only factor. I’m just saying…cuz I know lots of talented people that can blow but don’t take their clothes off. But they don’t have the name to back them up lol. but i get u

        • Miyako

Naw, that is not the definition of stripper.

        • mac

I totally agree! Women showing skin while performing is soo offensive! Why can’t they wear something more conservative, like a burqa!
People just disagree because they’re soo brainwashed by society! People like us are the epitome of class and good values!!

          • mac

um..that was sarcasm. People are actually this dense? Yikes.

          • SheBe

Or a niqab… Said no one ever!

        • mac

How old are you, 90? The most I ever seen her undressed on stage was her unitards shes been rocking lately. All her private areas were covered though so Im not seeing the issue

        • Just saying!!

lol I caught that reference right away. I always said she was try to be a classy stripper or trying to find a way to make it seem classy LOL

    • http://www.yourtango.com/users/cheekee-baby cheekee baby

      Did she SING well though?

      • inessa

yes, she SANG well!!!! Many other unknown singers would have sung this well by the way…..So what?

        • http://www.yourtango.com/users/cheekee-baby cheekee baby

“So what” the hell does her “stripping” have to do with her SINGING the national anthem today? She sang, and sang well. Isn’t that what she was there to do?

          • inessa

Let it slide! Some people will never understand some things!

          • Just saying!!

She didn’t sing. The news announced today that she lip synced the whole thing. But I get u lol

            • http://www.yourtango.com/users/cheekee-baby cheekee baby

She lip sang the hell outta that anthem though lol!

    • .zumba queen

I agree with you Inessa! I normally do not comment about the disgrace and lack of dignity and talent from these overrated, over exposed pop tarts, but I cannot fathom this person exposing half of her body on numerous magazines, gyrating in videos and on stage, and performing at the inauguration! Before the stans attack, I am not a “hater” just speaking the truth! On another note, Michelle Obama looked very beautiful

      • inessa

That is what i was trying to say..but there are so many sheep out there who don’t see where all this things are leading us. It’s a shame…

      • http://www.yourtango.com/users/cheekee-baby cheekee baby

I’m not a Beyonce fan personally. I don’t find her voice exactly pleasant to listen to for more than one song at a stretch. With that said, she’s a personal friend of the Obama’s and on that end alone she was an appropriate choice to sing at HIS inauguration.

        • inessa

You see???! THAT is the problem!!!! Inauguration is NOTHING PERSONAL!!! It’s supposed to represent the dignity of a WHOLE NATION!!! I can’t believe people are so blind!

          • http://www.yourtango.com/users/cheekee-baby cheekee baby

I can’t believe some people are such holy rollers and full of judgement and condemnation.

      • Alicia

If Beyonce likes being half exposed and gyrating on stage, what’s your deal? If you don’t like it, don’t watch.

    • Cookie

Um yeah, you are pretty much the only one that sees it that way. She is a performer. She entertains in costumes. I highly doubt that she walks around the city streets in leotards. If you are so sad, do something about it. You run for president, or congress or a senate seat. While you are complaining you get on a stage anywhere and do better. There is nothing shameful about entertaining. Etta James did it, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Josephine Baker..They are costumes…meant for the stage. Had she came out in a leotard, then I could understand, your bitterness, but she was in a ball gown for petes sake. Some people act as if this woman has really done something to them. What scandal has she been involved in? Not even a nip slip. You never hear anything horrible about her, but people act as if just by breathing she has done something to them personally.

      • Dichu eba realy lub mehSteebie

Heck, Josephine danced around in a skirt made of fruit, topless…

      • inessa

well…you hear A LOT about her stealing songs!! She has a PR team who works overtime!!!

    • bluekissess

On behalf of the MN community we all advise you to SHUT UP
