Style To Steal Or Girl, Stop–Special Edition: Who Was Fashionable And Who Was Failing At The Golden Globes?
While some of you were probably catching up on all the season premieres of your favorite cable shows last night, some of us were watching The Golden Globe Awards to find out who was going to win what, who was going to say what, and of course, who was wearing what! Pastel colors were huge, going sheer was the the thing to do, whether you were showing off tatas, or letting some skin peek through embroidered collars and colorful gowns. The looks were the talk of the town, aside from the awards, and we’ve pulled a few looks from the litter that definitely had us talking. Would you steal ’em or stop ’em? Let’s take a look and see…
Forever the diva, you can tell Jennifer Lopez NOTHING. Baby girl will be 70 in the chichest form-fitting gowns giving us life. Almost 30 years shy of such an age, Lopez did just that in this lace Zuhair Murad dress with long sleeves and a long train. With her side-swept hair, silver clutch and chandelier earrings, J.Lo knew she was killing the game without much trouble, so she gave her best face and got ready to find her way on the Best Dressed lists of the night. We’re loving the way the gown fits on her, and while an up-do would have been fab, there’s something about the side-swept hair that provides an extra kick of drama to an already dramatic gown. Steal!
When Berry stepped out to give the award for Best Director, my boyfriend decided to say that she looked better than most chicks half her age. And while I could have thrown some shade, I had to agree with him. WHAT IS THIS CHICK DRINKING ON!? She looks like a 30-year-old, not a woman in her late 40s. And while her body was toned and fab, this Versace dress, was NOT. The corset in the dress made her boobs look two different sizes, and there were too many other extra cut-outs and see-through parts that came off kind of random and unnecessary. Her accessories are great, and the hair is gorgeous as usual, but you’ll have to excuse me, this dress is a stop for me.
The Scandal and Django Unchained star hit the red carpet in a daring look that definitely had a lot going on. This Miu Miu ensemble was like two dresses in one with the crystal embroidery on the sheer front that stopped at the ankle, and the short dress underneath all that, which stopped mid-thigh. She tried choppy bangs and slick locks, and a small silver clutch with pointed-toe pumps for accessories. While I love Kerry, I think I would have preferred if the skirt was a whole lot longer and the hair was a bit more curly and less flat. While other people have panned the look, I still think it’s a steal. But what do you think?
While others went for sheer panels, thigh-high splits and open-back dresses, Nicole Richie opted to cover up her goods and showcase a pop of color. In a light blue long sleeved dress with a long train and embroidery all over by Naeem Khan, Richie looked great. Covered in a mix of floral and brocade designs, the Khan gown didn’t drown out the TV personality and fashion designer’s size. With long curly brown locks and some heavy blue eyeshadow (the latter of which she probably shouldn’t have tried to go match-y match-y with), I personally think Richie looked fabulous. Steal!
A big winner for the night, the Girls writer, star and producer came to the show in a burgundy gown that should have been glamorous, but came off kind of dull. The arms of the Zac Posen gown kept falling throughout the night, and when she made her dash up to the main stage to grab her award, the shoes homegirl was wearing (which we couldn’t see), made it impossible for her to walk up and down the stairs. The hair is cute, and the structural makeup of the gown is nice, but a brighter color and a different bodice would have done this gal some good. I’m still a huge fan, but I’ll have to ask her to stop with this one.
Wearing a pale blue pastel gown by Antonio Berardi, the actress showed off her slim figure, but covered up a lot of skin with a slim skirt, capped sleeves, a very small v-neck and peplum detailing around the waist. She let her long locks loose with a tight curl near the ends, a small silver clutch and large drop earrings. While I like her a lot, something about this look doesn’t work for me. The color is beautiful, but the neckline is weird, the peplum thing is starting to get a little dated and should probably be only used with tops rather than gowns that will be looked at and talked about for years to come, and the cap sleeves are a bit off too. But the hair and face? WORK! But sadly, I’ll have to stop this one…
Rocking a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown in coral, actress Jessica Alba looked the part of a Hollywood starlet with her strapless sweetheart neckline and structured skirt. She wore a dazzling piece of neck candy, grabbed a furry clutch in red, showcased a red lip and did wavy hair for the red carpet. And while I’ve seen a look similar to this one many times before on the Golden Globes red carpet, I think she looks absolutely fabulous. The dress is a winner on her figure, and the color is right on time with spring trends. Steal!
In a lime green strapless gown by Pamela Rolland that was covered in sparkles and featured a long train, the Olympic gold winner stepped on the red carpet with big hair, big heels and a big smile. With a multi-colored clutch in her hands, Douglas showed off her toned arms and worked it on the red carpet. I’m not going to lie, I’m not a fan of this particular dress matched with the big hair and bangs, as it all reminds me a prom night look, but I have love for this little lady for trying. What do you think of her look?
As a stylist to the stars, we were excited to see what Zoe was going to wear to the show and the after-parties, and she definitely had people talking with her white sequin gown and face full of make-up. The flowing dress, which was a bit dull for my taste, was accessorized with large bangles, a clutch, large gold hoop earrings and a clean updo. I don’t think she looks as bad as other blogs and publications tried to make it seem, but I will say I think her gown drowns her out and makes her look very tiny. Wasn’t what I was hoping for from her, so I’ll stay stop.
When all this leg comes out, it’s clear that someone is single and ready to mingle, okay!? The actress stepped out in this black lace Emilio Pucci gown showing a whole lot of skin. If the thigh-high slit wasn’t enough for you, you could get an extra dose of skin with the open neckline. I will say that the hair and make-up are gorgeous, but this dress might be just a little too swexy, and low-key screaming “LOOK AT ME!” I’ll personally have to say “Stop it” on this one, but if you’re about flashing that body, I’m sure you’ll say STEAL!
The new mother and beloved singer has been kicking back taking care of her newborn son and chilling in the cut, but she made an appearance at the show and even picked up an award for Best Original Song with “Skyfall” for the latest James Bond installment. Known for keeping it covered, Adele went for a familiar look with this gown in black with a beaded neckline and 3/4 length sleeves. The Burberry gown hugged her post-baby body nicely, and the retro hair and make-up was a winner for me. You better work, honey! Steal.
Going against the grain on the red carpet, which is usually dominated by massive floor-length gowns, the always stunning Thandie Newton arrived to the Awards show in a beautiful Giles dress that stopped mid-thigh, allowing her to show off some strapped lilac heels with a peep toe. The dress itself was sheer up top and had a blue skirt, and it was covered in a wealth of beads and crystals that only this high neck tulle gown could make look fitting. The hair is cute (don’t let the pic at the right fool you), the red lip as a bit of contrast was genius, and whether it was the best pick or not for such a gathering, it’s a wonderful look. Steal!
Showing up at the HBO Golden Globes after party, the beloved singer wore a black and gold wrap dress that had a tie at the waist. The colors of the gown were almost like splashes of paint, and to accessorize, she threw on these gold diamond-shaped earrings with a lot of character, added a red lip, and pulled her braids into a fun side bun. You know, I love Jilly from Philly, but I was hoping for something a little bit more glamorous and jaw-dropping. She has the figure for it! This look doesn’t really do her beauty much justice, so I’ll reluctantly have to say, stop.
Last but not least, looking like someone half her age, Vanessa Williams arrived to the same HBO after-set as Scott, but wearing much brighter colors and a much more interesting ensemble. Bringing back paisley prints, Williams wore a floor-length gown covered in the pattern, had big flowing sleeves, and was gathered around the bust. Her hair was in big curls, and she kept her accessories to a minimum, opting for for a small clutch, a bangle and some simple hoop earrings. While I’m not a fan of the colorful print, I’m indeed a fan of the way Mama Williams is rocking this look! Especially the big hair. Surprisingly enough, steal!
So whose look was your favorite from the night?
