Black On The Big Screen: 9 Movies Coming Out in 2013 Featuring Black Hollywood

We always hear it’s hard for black actors and actresses in Hollywood, and we all know, not too many movies come out each year with a majority black cast, or even a black actor/actress as the lead. Despite the scarcity of roles for Black Hollywood, there are definitely films that will be representing for the brothers and sisters in 2013. The following are nine movies coming out this year that we know of so far, that feature Black actors.

A Haunted House— Friday, January 11

A married couple, Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins), move into what they believe is their dream home, only to find that it is haunted. Kisha becomes processed by demons and Malcolm hires ghost hunters and a priest (Cedric the Entertainer) to help her.


Snitch— Friday, February 22

A father (Dwanye Johnson) whose teenage son who he believes is wrongly accused of drug distribution is facing a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. To prove his son’s innocence, he agrees to go undercover and expose a kingpin and his drug cartel.


Tyler Perry’s Temptations: Confessions of Marriage Counselor— Friday, March 29

A marriage counselor (Jurnee Smollett) whose job is to give relationship advice is struggling with her own marriage. She eventually falls for one of her patients, a successful mogul, as things take a turn for the worst.



42— Friday, April 12

Based on legendary baseball player, Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman), the movie displays the good, the bad and heroic moments of the first black major league player of the modern era. Not to mention, the trailer is fantastic!



Pain and Gain— Friday, April 26

Get ready to see Dwayne Johnson all over the big screen this year, as he is set to be in many other movies other than the two on this list. Based on true events, a group of poor bodybuilders decide to kidnap a businessman and extort him. But, when the businessman survives a murder attempt by the bodybuilders, he hires a detective to solve the crime done to him.

Tyler Perry’s We the Peeples— Friday, May 10

Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) is enthusiastic to propose to his girlfriend (Kerry Washington), except there is one problem— he’s never met her family. So when she leaves for a family reunion, Wade decides to crash the event and meet his soon-to-be in-laws.

After Earth— Friday, June 7

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced mankind to leave the planet Earth, Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son (Jaden Smith), crash land there. Cypher is injured and his son must now travel to find their rescue beacon to signal for help. This sorta reminds me of I Am Legend, no?




Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain— Thursday, July 4

OK…OK… this isn’t exactly a movie, but nonetheless, it will be playing in movie theaters. Following up with the success of ‘Laugh at My Pain,’ the stand-up showcases Kevin’s ‘Let Me Explain’ comedic tour of 10 countries and 80 cities.

Battle of the Year— Friday, September 13

Battle of the Year is about an international b-boying competition America hasn’t won in the last 15 years. Derrek (Josh Holloway), a disciplined coach, is hired to get a dysfunctional team to learn to work together in order to win. Laz Alonso, Chris Brown, Terrance J and others also star in the movie.
