‘I Was Saying What I Thought People Wanted To Hear’: Brandy Discusses Hiding Her True Self In ‘JET’

December 24, 2012  |

Over the years, many music lovers have confessed to enjoying singer Brandy’s music, but being unable to fully embrace her because something about her just seemed so unauthentic. And now, it seems that she is providing us with an explanation as to why. In a recent Jet Magazine interview, the 33-year-old opened up about a lot of the controversy that she has faced throughout her career, including pretending to be married to music producer and father of her daughter, Rodney Smith as well as her current relationship with music industry exec Ryan “Press” Preston. Check out some of the interview’s highlights.

On how she felt about her inability to be herself:

“I used to be at a point where I wouldn’t want to watch my own interviews because I knew I wasn’t showing the truest part of who I was.”

On leading people to believe that she was married:

“I was saying what I thought people wanted to hear.”

On how this revelation has helped her relationship:

“I’m past the point of thinking when I get into a relationship I have to camouflage who I am. With Ryan, I can be completely myself.”

On what she hopes her experiences will teach others:

“I’ve been through hell, but I’ve come through it. I’ve broke through different obstacles and I still have a smile on my face from the inside out. You’re much bigger than your circumstances. You can rise above what happens to you.

Brandy seems to have come to the wonderful place of self-love and self-acceptance. She’s finally embracing who she is and is not only acknowledging her mistakes, but choosing to learn from them. That is an absolutely amazing mental space to be in and we are excited to watch her evolve as she continues to grow into herself.
