It has been a rocky road for some of Hollywood’s most notable names when it comes to their children. Custody battles aren’t exactly a rarity in Hollywood, but it it’s not often that judges rule in favor of men and award them custody of their children while offering their ex-wives visitation and sometimes no rights at all. That’s the situation all of these celebrity women found themselves in as they had to relinquishment their position as sole guardian and try their best to co-parent from afar.

Kelly Rutherford

The former Melrose Place and Gossip Girl actress has been locked in a bitter and absolutely crazy custody battle with her ex-husband, German businessman Daniel Giersch. While there has been the requisite mudslinging back and forth, this battle took an ugly turn for the worst when a California judge ruled that Giersch could have custody over the couple’s two children … in France. Why you ask? Well it’s because Giersch managed to get his visa revoked and he’s no longer permitted within the United States. It also didn’t help matters that he insisted Rutherford was trying to cut him out of his children’s lives. Rutherford has continued to fight to regain custody of her babies, Helena and Hermes, appearing on numerous talk shows to tell her heartbreaking story.

Tameka Foster

The claws certainly came out when the former Mrs. Usher Raymond went to battle to retain custody of her sons, Usher Raymond V and Naviyd. Foster claimed that due to Usher’s extensive travel schedule he would be unable to adequately care for his children; Usher’s lawyer claimed that Foster was “incapable of being a proper parent” and that she “does not have the emotional stability to or capacity to bond with them, and therefore she is handicapped.” Um, shots fired. Needless to say when Foster decided to tell Usher “I will f**k you up” during a heated argument and later admitted it, that didn’t help her case either. Ultimately a judge awarded the singer primary custody of the two boys.

Pilar Sanders

The beautiful Pilar Sanders, ex-wife of NFL great Deion Sanders, recently lost custody of her two sons and saw her child support payments cut in half. After the judge’s ruling, Sanders spoke out about her custody battle: “I am sad that Deion has been able to keep my boys away from me since Oct. 26 — no Halloween, no Thanksgiving — and now he is threatening to keep them away from me for Christmas. . . . He is using our innocent children as a pawn in this ugly, ugly divorce.” We obviously know how that all ended. and though we’re feeling for Pilar, can we ask both parties to just think of what is best for the children? Quit the power plays.

Siohvaughn Wade

The saga of the Wade custody battle stretched over close to a year and saw Siohvaughn Wade throw some terrible accusations her former husband’s way. Claims about her husband’s inability to care of their children were ultimately found to be untrue and Siohvaugh’s campaign to destroy his reputation in front of the judge backfired, with the final ruling including these harsh words: “This court finds that [Siohvaughn Wade] has embarked on an unstoppable and relentless pattern of conduct for over two years to alienate the children from their father, and lacks either the ability or the willingness to facilitate, let alone encourage, a close and continuing relationship between them.” Word to the wise, trying to ruin your ex’s rep is far from the way to prove you’re a great mom.

Britney Spears

Now, think what you will, but we could have seen this hotmess of a custody battle coming a mile away. The pop princess skyrocketed to fame in 1999 and the early 2000s so fast that maybe we shouldn’t be surprised it didn’t take all that long for her life to spiral a bit out of control. WhenBritney Spears and husband Kevin Federline called it quits in 2006, the couple originally agreed to share custody of their children. But it wasn’t long before her drug and alcohol abuse, subsequent erratic behavior .and ultimate conservatorship when she was admitted to a psych ward precipitated Federline gaining sole custody of the former couple’s two children, Jayden and Sean. Thankfully, Ms. Spears got her life back on track and her and Federline were able to reach a joint custody agreement. Cheers to a happy ending.

Katherine Jackson

As if the death of Michael Jackson wasn’t tough enough, it wasn’t long before a strange, sordid custody battle ensued over the late singer’s three children, Paris, Prince Michael and Blanket. Katherine Jackson, the children’s grandmother, was originally caring for the kids but after a strange 10-day trip to Arizona (a trip that was later revealed to have been shared with some of Katherine’s sons and daughters) and allegations that she was being held against her will, temporary custody was awarded to Michael Jackson’s nephew T.J. Ultimately the two have become co-guardians to MJ’s legacies.

Drew Barrymore

So Drew Barrymore may not have been the one to lose custody, but she was still involved in one of Hollywood’s most notorious family squabbles, even before she left her teen years. After her silver screen turn in E.T. pushed her into international stardom, Barrymore became a mainstay of the party scene at a very young age. She was a regular at Studio 54, along with her mother Jaid, indulging in all its drug and alcohol vices in her pre- and early-teen years. Thankfully, Barrymore soon recognized the path she was on and at the age of 15 pleaded with the courts to become emancipated from her mother. The rest is Hollywood history as Barrymore staged a remarkable comeback throughout the 90s and 2000s and has become an A-list actress.

Courtney Love

One part of alternative rock royalty, Courtney Love has been in the limelight not only for her music, but also for her personal struggles. After losing husband Kurt Cobain to suicide in April 1994, Love continued to raise the couple’s only child, Frances Bean. Though Love had her own struggles with drugs and alcohol abuse, the two seemed to be doing OK as mother and daughter. Unfortunately that all changed in 2009 when Bean was placed under temporary guardianship of Cobain’s mother and his sister after she made several inflammatory claims against her mother, including blaming her with the death of several pets. Love didn’t handle this particularly well, taking to Facebook and writing: “I hate to sound cold but any kid of mine who pulls this s**t has lost her position. She was deceptive, she lied and she’s lying to herself… My daughter is not always honest.”

Janine Lindemulder (Jesse James)

Now you know things are pretty bad when Jesse James is the one being awarded custody of a child. But that’s exactly what happened back in 2011 after years in court. Lindemulder, an adult film actress, was on the losing side of this battle mainly because of her checkered past with the police, her past drug use and several other issues. Come on, lady, if you have a daughter … don’t you think cleaning up your act would be a good idea?

  • What is going on with her hands in this picture?

  • Kelly Rutherford should be the poster child for instant karma, she played a major part in this man losing his visa by accusing him of being an arms dealer, I guess she figured if he was kicked out of the country then she would have the kids to herself…she figured wrong…lol. I have no love for any woman who tries to kick a man out of his kids life. When you have children you try to at least be cordial for the child’s sake. I hate my ex but we grit our teeth and put up a united front for our children sake. It all plays a part in raising a productive member of society.

Sometimes the ex likes to try to kick you out subtly first. I’m living proof, still going hard at it with him 6 years later (after the divorce). To this day I don’t understand his motivation when he was the one that cheated, lied and abused me!!! That may work in your situation but that’s not always the case (I’m very glad that you two are mature enough to work together for your child)…….
