December 21, 2012  |

The shooting that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, last Friday has placed gun control back on the national radar and celebrities are attempting to bring more awareness to this issue by banning together for a new PSA to end gun violence.

Beyonce, Chris Rock, and Jamie Foxx are just a handful of the celebrities who have lent their voice to the issue in this public service announcement released online by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Other famous faces in the video are Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson,Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Michelle Williams, Courteney Cox, Ellen DeGeneres, Julianne Moore, Selena Gomez, Jon Hamm, Will Ferrell, Aziz Ansari, Christina Applegate, Debra Messing, Elizabeth Banks, Brooke Shields, Kristen Bell, , Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, and Jason Bateman.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is an organization made up of 750 mayors and 750,000 grassroots supporters across the country who are joining together to demand that President Obama and Congress develop a comprehensive plan to end gun violence, according to their website, There, this PSA will be housed along with a three-point wish list of what the organization envisions in the legislation they’re pushing for:
  1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America
  2. Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
  3. Make gun trafficking a federal crime, including real penalties for “straw purchasers”

On the site, you can also find other news on this topic, volunteer, or make a donation to the cause. Check out the video below. Do you agree with their gun control plan?

  • Tell em why you mad son!

What’s incredibly interesting to me how we as a people can’t seem to show any empathy or compassion to our own. Because this past year has been a very violent and horrific loss for many families in Chicago and not one of these so-called concerned entertainers stepped up to spoke, or against the gun violence, but the moment something tragic happens to caucasian children, it’s an outpour of PSA’s and Celebrity’s speaking out against gun violence. Shyt’s pathetic when we can’t be equally disgusted when it happens to our own…….in our communities.

  • realtalk

the reason why the celebrities are behind this is because its part of an agenda the government had to take away guns. This was all planned dont believe everything you see and hear from the media. This all happened at the hands of people who are meant to protect us. People better wake up!

  • realtalk

no “plan” made by the government can control these things. They are going to continue and only get worse before god comes back. Get ready ya’ll. This is only the beginning.

So these celebrities are supposed to sway law makers….when @ the end of the day they get to go back home to their bullet proof mega mansions where their body guards patrol? There is no way this PSA is genuine, there’s no way this is not for self advancement, there’s no way this is not just another addition to their resumes…they may all go to the Brooklyn nets arena & have several seats

  • Band-wagoners! Where where are these voices when countless of children are abused by the hands of their parent or caregiver? Where is their voice with countless innocent babies in the inner-city are killed (more than 20 per year).

I have zero respect for these people because, like others have said, they pick up a “cause” because it’s popular. They pick up a cause that’s “safe” and won’t cost them anything. I don’t want to hear anything they have to say!

  • seriously?

I deplore people who are social fad pushers. Like to make their voices known when something major happens thinking they’re doing their part, they’re doing something important. Wrong! Being on top of the issue being invested and fighting for change is what is important is what moves ppl hearts.
I am going to take seriously a bunch of overpaid people, who probably couldn’t even name all the of the bill of rights to me, Obama kiss assers because they post a video?
Listen here! Here is my open letter!
Lack of strict gun laws was always bad! It shouldn’t had to take 20 KIDS and 6 ADULTS to become dead to make you realize that. If you knew anything about your nation besides being best friends with the president and social issues you would have cared about the many ONES who died. Maybe if ya did we wouldn’t had to had to worry about the many.

This isn’t a gun issue…it is a”heart”issue. the hearts of many people worldwide are corrupt with pure evil. If the intent is to kill…anything can and will be used.

  • natrualj

So, make me understand. A psycho with such reckless dusregard for human life is gonna take a pause because these ppl say so. So out of touch, its ridiculous.

  • Eggy

This reminds me of that Dave Chappelle joke about how right after 9/11, some media outlet interviewed Ja Rule to see what his opinion was on terrorism. Why anyone thinks that the Adam Lanzas of the world give 2 cents about Beyonce or Chris Rock’s opinion….I don’t know. I highly doubt any senator is now more moved to pass legislation because Gwyneth Paltrow said so…”I know 20 babies got murdered at school and a whole bunch of people got shot in a movie theater last July…but you know what?? Now that Brad Pitt is on it, maybe we should really take this seriously.”

    • Pivyque

Lol. I was just thinking that!

  • Kaori

I think celebrities do these things to advance their careers rather than because they actually give a hoot. The more popular a celebrity becomes, the more out of touch with reality that they are.

    • Just saying!!

      Amen!! Reading my mind!!

What is the purpose for these “celebrities” to get behind this topic? I’m sorry… this is bogus. Americans are bombing schools or even entire cities in other countries but its done one time here and all of a sudden we need gun control? Reality is that having guns is not the problem. The problem is those who have guns… people don’t value individuals lives (all around the world) therefore someone’s life is lost over sneakers, pride or even a simple misunderstanding. Just because BEYONCE says… have gun control doesn’t mean her bodyguard is going to stop carrying the guns.

I feel like along with “a plan” there needs to be a stronger focus on mental health. Each child has to go through physicals during their time from elementary school up into their first year of college, they need to also implement a psychological evaluation right along with those physicals. That way people can have a better grasp on someone’s mental being before they do something horribly drastic.

Do a bunch of armed bodyguard having celebs really motivate people? I’ll just hope so.
