The nation was shaken earlier this month as they learned of the tragic murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher. Countless rumors swirled regarding what drove Belcher to murder his girlfriend Kassandra Perkins by shooting her nine times and then proceeding to take his own life, including one that implicated Kassandra was involved with singer Trey Songz. One which Trey quickly came forth and denied. As the story unfolds and investigations  continue,  new information is being revealed. The New York Post is reporting that Jovan’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd told investigators that questions surrounding who actually fathered the couple’s 3-month-old daughter Zoey may have been what set Jovan off.

“The mother believed that there was an issue over whether [Belcher] was the father,” a source told The Post.

“She said he [believed he] wasn’t necessarily the father of the child.”

A member from Kansas City law enforcement confirmed that this statement was true and that the couple did indeed argue over Zoey’s paternity.

“She told [police] there was a question about the paternity.”

Authorities however, stated that the paternity of three-month-old Zoey will not be a factor in the Kansas City Police investigation of this case.

“That would not be something they’re going to investigate,” said Sgt. Marisa Barnes. “It’s a ‘he-said, she-said’ so there’s no way to investigate. It would be nothing more than a civil matter.”

Jovan’s mother has temporary custody of Zoey; however the courts have not selected a permanent guardian as of yet. Kassandra’s family has refused to comment on the paternity rumor but revealed that they intend on being active participants in Zoey’s life.

“There has been a disheartening amount of rumors and speculation surrounding the tragic loss of our Kasi,” the family statement said.”

“No one will every truly know why this happened, nor is there anything to be said that could justify or ease our pain.”

“We will raise Baby Zoey in the knowledge of the love from which she was born,” Perkins’ family said in a statement.”

It is unfortunate that the lives of these young adults ended so prematurely. Our prayers go out to the families of both Jovan and Kassandra. We hope that Zoey will be raised in the loving household that she deserves.

What are your thoughts on these details being revealed? Do you find them to be slandering to Kassandra or important factors surrounding the case?

Oh geez. When are people going to learn to start holding others accountable for their actions? This is one of the reasons why I said on the other article that his family should not have the baby.

  • Paternity

This man had issues that were not diagnosed prior to the incident. His mother is not acknowledging his mental issues. Paternity is not a reason to kill

  • IllyPhilly

Was Trey Songz a potential father? Why’d they need to bring his name up?

  • bluekissess

Looking at all of these deaths is putting me in an uncomfortable place mentally. No matter how many questions get answered people died. I do believe in revelations so I’ll just pray for baby zoey

    • Kaori

“No matter how many questions get answered people died.”

      What does that mean?

      • bluekissess

No matter what the motive was baby zoey won’t ever get her parents back.

        • Kaori

          Oh, alright.

  • L-Boogie

Simply sad. Now a beautiful baby does not have her parents.

So WHAt? A simple paternity test could have proven either party right and everyone would have moved the hell on,this isn’t enough for me to even try to comprehend the animal jovan was,no excuse for what your monster of a son did.

  • TRUTH IS

Is/was a paternity test done?!? Why does his mother have the kid if it’s not his?!? Will the NFL support her if it’s not his kid?? Where is her family in all this?!? More questions than answers. No excuse to kill her!!

I am sorry about the tragedy. I am not surprised. In the heat of the
argument, she could have slipped and told him that the child may not be
his and he went off. It is no excuse for him to do something that
stupid. When couples argue, in the heat of it, the person can
accidently say something to that nature. If he had question about paternity from the start, he should have somehow asked to take a DNA test. More than likely a DNA test probably was not done. This is the reason why the minute that baby comes out of that woman a DNA should automatically be done to avoid foolishness like this happening. It will save some guys a lot of headache and financial burden for 18 + years. Sadly, you have a lot of women who play games with these guys about the children.

From what I have read, Zoe is suppose to get a million dollars from the league until she is eighteen. It is called a Surviving Child benefit a program that NFL has.
Under the terms of the league’s collective bargaining agreement,
Zoey, who will be three months old on Dec. 11, will receive $9,000 per
month for the next 48 months, and at least $4,000 per month from age 4
until she turns 18 – or 23 if she goes to college.

      • TRUTH IS

If they do a DNA test and it turns out it’s not his kid, I wonder if she is still entitled to it!?

This is horrible: Is it me or does that baby look like she’s asking “Are you sure you’re my daddy?”

    • bluekissess

I think baby Zoey is admiring her parents

        you’re right
