If you had the time and energy to dedicate to watching the entire damn near six hour “12-12-12” benefit concert last night, kudos to you! But if you missed out on folks like Alicia Keys because of the continuous stream of elder rock musicians taking the stage–and Kanye West, who seemed to get a so-so response–and you want to know what she performed and how she did, you’re in the right place.
The beloved R&B singer took the stage to close out the show, performing tracks like “Brand New Me” off of her new album, Girl On Fire, and “No One.” In her hot red gown and with her bob tinged with a hint of brown streaks, without extra bravado, Keys just got on the piano and sang. And she did so with a lot of passion may I add. Keys definitely had a few moments where her voice struggled to hit some of her higher notes (see the end of “Brand New Me”), but a majority of the ride watching her 11-minute performance was smooth. Plus, it helps that I’m a big fan of both songs. In a memorable moment to get concertgoers more involved, she asked everyone to bring out their phones and light Madison Square Garden up for her performance of “No One.” As we know, the concert was for a great cause and in turn, Keys did a great job bringing up the spirits and reminding New Yorkers how strong they are. As she put it, “The resilience of this city is incredible. I love my city!” But I must say, kind of shocked Jay-Z didn’t come out of the darkness to do “Empire State of Mind” with her…but it was still good.
Check out her performance of both tracks and let us know what you thought. And once again, didn’t she look stunning?
