Kids? Maybe One Day: R&B Singers Who Are Not About That Baby Life Right Now
When we ran a post yesterday about rappers without babies some people didn’t understand what the big deal was and why there were no women on the list. The truth is, the same stereotype about male entertainers knocking up a bunch of women doesn’t follow female artists, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get criticized for other reasons. As one commenter pointed out, for women, instead of supporting the fact that they aren’t having a baseball league of babies, people ask, what are they waiting on?
Well, these ladies aren’t worried about that at all. Just like many of us non-famous gals have other things on the brain besides baby bottles and booties, these celebs are enjoying non-mommyhood to the fullest and debunking that old tired line about all black women having a bunch of kids by a bunch of different men. Here are 14 girls in the game who are not about that baby life — right now at least.
Rihanna may love spending time with her mentor, Jay-Z’s, baby daughter Blue Ivy but that hasn’t encouraged her to pop out any babies of her own. In a recent interview with Ellen, the Bajan singer said she’d absolutely love to have kids one day, and she wouldn’t even mind becoming a mommy on her own, though that’s not the plan right now. She told Ellen:
“I’m pretty sure I could handle it if I had to on my own, but that’s not what I’m striving for.”
I’m not sure what Chris Brown’s stance on babies is, but should these two keep going at it like they are, she likely won’t be raising a child on her own. But that’s for way down the line. Right now the 24-year-old is doing what any 24-year-old celeb should be doing, living the good life and enjoying having her first number 1 album — and getting that old thing back.
Kelly Rowland’s another one who’s close to the Carter’s but hasn’t let the Blue Ivy baby madness go to her head. Last December, UK Magazine Hello asked the singer whether she sees kids in her future like her cousin Bey and she said:
“I definitely see children in my life but I’m definitely not ready yet. I’m too selfish. [Laughs] I want to sleep and I’m not up for getting up in the night because the kid wants to eat. I like doing things my own way right now, but when I’m ready to share my life with a child, I will.”
It’s been difficult for Ciara to get back to her “Goodies” glory days, but for anyone wondering why the singer keeps trying so hard to get back on top, her desire to become a mother one day might explain it. A few years back at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex gala, Ciara was asked whether she wants to have children one day, and she gushed, “Oh, of course, my gosh yes,” and added, “to be honest, that’s part of the motivation for everything that I do.”
But is she ready to have kids right now? Absolutely not.
“There’s so much more that I need to accomplish in my career before I have kids,” she said. “So I’m motivated by the idea of having kids and a family. I wanna work as hard as I can right now, so that when I do choose to start a family, I can do it comfortably and spend time with them.”
Sounds like it might be a little while longer for the 27-year-old.
Like Ciara, Ashanti is definitely looking forward to becoming a mother one day, just not today. The 32-year-old wants to have her very own tribe of Israel but not until she knows she can feed all those mouths. The trapped in the closet girlfriend of Nelly told Page Six magazine a few years back:
“I need, like, 12 [kids]… I love kids. I definitely want to get married… I’m so family oriented. I want the big wedding, I want the long marriage, I want kids. [But]I’ve got to stack my cheese a little bit more… I want to be able to bring my kids into the world nice and comfortable.”
Looks like she’s still on the grind.
OK, so Nicki isn’t really an R&B artist but ya’ll know she tries to belt out the lyrics on her songs from time to time. One thing she won’t be belting out for a little while though is babies. Being at the height of her career, it’s totally understandable for the YMCMB front runner who turns 30 next month to put kids on the backburner — like for the next 10 years. She recently told Complex:
In 2022, I’ll definitely be married and I’ll definitely have my two children,” she said. “I really need a boy in my life. A baby boy. Because…I’m so attached to my little brother and I felt like that was my real son. And boys, they’re just so, I don’t know…my heart just melts when I see them.”
As for her goal right now though, she told the mag when it comes to being an artist:
“I just want you to leave me the f**k alone.”
Yeah, it’s probably good she’s putting off the bambinos for now.
Miss Keri Babay has been off the main radar for a little while since her last album dropped but it’s not because she was off starting a family. The soon-to-be 30-year-old does see motherhood in her future but right now the singer/songwriter is too busy turning her swag on as a new signee with Wilhelmina Models. Almost two years ago, she spoke to US Mag about what she wants in her ideal man and when it comes to her vision of a perfect family, she said:
“I want kids one day. There are five kids in my family, and I want what I had growing up. I want at least three kids. But five? I don’t want to drive myself crazy like my mom probably did. I think three is a good number.”
No one should be surprised Jordin Sparks isn’t yet a mother as the 22-year-old singer and actress has been open about the virginity promise ring on her finger that everyone took notice of when she won American Idol at 17. Since hooking up with Jason Derulo, Jordin has admitted to being less committed to wearing the ring and holding on to her virginity, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to pop out anyone’s babies. She just told OK magazine:
”I hope to marry and have kids one day, for sure, and I do see [Jason] in my future. But we both have to be ready. If that happens one day, it will happen. ”
We can add the word “aspiring” before R&B singers if you like because I know the shade is rising. Tamar is more like a reality star/r&b singer but one thing that is for sure is she’s putting off babies until she gets this music thing off the ground. On the premiere season of Tamar & Vince, the baby of the Braxton clan attempted in vitro fertilization (IVF) in order to start a family, but after going through the process, Tamar realized she wasn’t quite in the right frame of mind to have a baby. She told the Huffington Post in a recent interview:
“I just felt like after the IVF process there were some things that were very important to me that I accomplished just as a woman and as a person just to show my kids by example, not just by telling them. I never want my kids to feel like I’m just some housewife who was just kicking it with my husband, because that’s not the kind of woman that I am. If I don’t do things for myself then how am I going to show my kids? So that’s why we decided to wait.”
Mary J. Blige
At 41, Mary has put off babies for a while now and she still continues to. As recent as this year the singer told the Singersroom she wouldn’t mind being a mother but it doesn’t have to happen today.
“When it’s time, when it happens, it’s in my future,” she said. “I’m not planning it. I don’t want to do it because it’s the trend.”
Considering the big name artists like Beyonce and Mariah Carey who recently entered the realm of motherhood, I can see Mary putting off mommydom for a few more years until all the hype dies down.
