Did You Know They Were BFFs Before The Fame? Celebs We Didn’t Know Were Homies Before They Made It
Celebrity friendships are nothing out of the ordinary. Rich people befriending other rich people? It only makes sense. But it’s definitely interesting to find out about the very mismatched or unique friendships that some celebrities had with one another, and that a few still maintain to this day. Whether it’s a legendary rapper hooking up a Hollywood starlet, or two top models getting along (when does that happen!?), these friendships definitely made us say “Whaaaaaaa!?” at one time or another. Friends. How many of us have them? If you’re a celeb, you have hellas, just take a look at this slideshow and you’ll see.
And oh yeah, be VERY prepared to click.
Lauryn Hill & Zach Braff
Both from Jersey, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill singer and the former “Scrubs” star were childhood cronies who used to tell each other deep dark secrets and share lunches. Naw, I’m just kidding, I don’t think it was all that deep, but they were friends as kids, and so cool with one another that Braff asked Hill to come to his Bar Mitzvah. The story he told Jane Magazine a few years back goes like this:
Lauryn Hill did go to my bar mitzvah. There was a game called Coke and Pepsi. You’d have a partner, and one person was Coke and the other Pepsi. Depending on what the DJ would yell, you had to run and get on that person’s lap. And Lauryn was my Coke and Pepsi partner.
Hmmm, sounds a little inappropriate for young people, but whatever works…
Jessie J & Adele
The two powerhouse Brit singers are not only dominating the charts and the music scene now, but they were singing friends back when they went to school together. According to Jessie J’s autobiography, she and diamond-selling Adele used to meet up at lunchtime and get their Fame on by having sing-offs and share the new lyrics and stuff they were working on:
I had all sorts of friends. I knew Adele; we were in the same year. We used to hang out at lunchtimes and have a little jam. We’d sing songs we’d written or perform whatever we were working on.
Lindsay Lohan & Raven-Symoné
Before Lindsay Lohan was the troubled star always getting into trouble, she was a young new talent in Hollywood and had the chance to meet Raven-Symoné during a photoshoot (I presume it was the Vanity Fair “Young Hollywood” issue). Surprisingly enough, they immediately hit it off and were fast friends. And as baller young movie stars with a lot of money and no desire to go to college, they actually tried to move in together. Raven told Global Grind that things didn’t work out, but that she had nothing but love for Lindsay:
‘When I First met Lindsay Lohan, we clicked because we did the fashion shoot together, she was cool. We were the only ones that were like: ‘What up girl’, I was like ‘What Up girl…’ I’ll just say I thought she was from Atlanta the way she was proportioned and acted, when normally girls in the industry look a different way.
I was like ‘Let me find out you’re down’ and she was like ‘Yeah I eat’, and I was like ‘Good for you, you eat, thats rare!’ And so I was like ‘I know you’re not going to college right now and I’m not going to college so let’s have a roommate experience.’ She was real real cool actually. She became real busy with work, and she never really moved in I just got rent from her for 14 months.
Tyra Banks & Kimora Lee
It’s hard out here for the beautiful people, especially for the black sistahs in the modeling industry. And after years of feeling like Naomi Campbell wanted to bite her head off, I can see why Banks valued her friendship with Kimora Lee so much. The two became close as new faces walking the runways together. On top of that, they lived together and shared stories about the men in their life (including Russell Simmons, who according to Tyra, at one point tried to get at her too). To this day they remain close, and Banks is the godmother to Kimora’s first daughter, Ming Lee.
Cameron Diaz & Snoop Dogg
Both students at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, actress Cameron Diaz and legendary rapper Snoop Dogg were, you could say, cool. I mean, how many people do you know who don’t get along with their alleged weed dealer? While Diaz said Calvin Broadus was years older than her, she remembers him clearly and fondly, saying, “He was a year older than me…I remember him; he was very tall and skinny. He wore lots of ponytails. And I’m pretty sure I bought weed from him.” According to reports, Snoop went on George Lopez’s talk show months later and admitted that he might have sold her a little somethin’ somethin’, deeming it “white girl weed.”
Maya Rudolph & Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth knows she likes to kick it with the sistas doesn’t she!? Before she was chillin with Bey and “N***as in Paris,” Gwyneth was besties with SNL alum and “Up All Night” funny lady Maya Rudolph. The two went to Crossroads school in Santa Monica and were thicker than thieves, starring in cooky school plays with one another. To this day, the two still actually remain close, even though they have new friends (fab ones) in their circles.
Tisha Campbell & Tichina Arnold
So yes, Tisha and Tichina were homies for life after starring as Gina and Pam on “Martin,” but did you know that before they were both trying to handle their crazy leading man, they were friends as children? Their bond became a bit complicated during their time on the show, especially after Campbell filed a lawsuit against Martin Lawrence for sexual harassment, but according to Arnold, who talked about it all this week on “Watch What Happens Live,” they were able to pull through, and she’s still friends with both Lawrence and Campbell:
The lawsuit was a very interesting thing to be a part of. Tisha and I have been friends since childhood, and Martin and I are still friends. There’s a point where you have to be professional and a point where you have to be personal, and I was very well aware of separating the two, and Tisha always respected that. It was very weird, but I handled it as best I could.
Robin Williams & Christopher Reeves
Can I first say that I’ve loved me some Robin Williams (not in THAT way) ever since Mrs. Doubtfire? Now that we’ve got that out of the way, did you know that Mrs. Doubtfire and the original Superman were besties? As the only two students of elite talents to be selected for acceptance into Julliard’s Acting School, the advanced program, Robin Williams and Christopher Reeves were often the only two people in their classes, and were also roommates and because of that, they became very close to one another. Their bond remained strong throughout their successful careers, Reeves’ unfortunate accident, and his eventual death. Williams has even helped to look after the son Reeves and his late wife, Dana Reeves, left behind, helping to take care of him and allegedly paying off the late actor’s medical bills that were left behind.
Jean-Michel Basquiat & Madonna
Every rapper’s favorite artist and Neo-expressionist painter/graffiti artist was all the rage in the ’80s, so much so that he attracted a wide array of very interesting friends. A slew of New Yorkers trying to make it in their respective artistic lanes flocked to Basquiat (aside from the very established Andy Warhol), and the Material Girl was one of them. They kicked it and got friendly (and drunk) at local bars, and from time to time, yes, they even had sex with one another. But the two never went past more than friends–with benefits. More than 20 years later, the singer is one of the lucky few who owns and collects the iconic artwork of her former friend.
Jennifer Aniston & Chaz Bono
Way before Aniston made “The Jennifer” haircut all the rage thanks to her time on “Friends,” and before Chastity Bono was Chaz, they were girlfriends who loved big ’80s hair and were cultivating their talents at New York’s High School of Performing Arts. When asked by Allure about her friendship with the daughter-er, son, of Cher, she made it seem like Chaz was the popular one everybody wanted to kick it with, saying “Every day a group of us would go to Chaz’s house after school. I haven’t spoken to him in awhile.” When asked if Chaz’s reassignment surgery confused her, she was clear, saying, “Well, obviously, yeah. I mean, even for his — her — mother, I think. His mother. But, you know, good for her.”
Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire
Rosie Perez & Tupac
Jada Pinkett Smith wasn’t the only little lady that Tupac left a spot in his heart for, strictly on the friendship tip (or as far as we know). Actress and choreographer Rosie Perez had a tight bond with Pac that got misconstrued by the public as a romantic relationship. She has refuted that claim. The two met while she was putting together moves for Heavy D and while he was dancing in the background with Digital Underground. He respected her hustle as one of the few female hip-hop choreographers out, and they blossomed after the fact. She even recalled a time with XXL when her date to the Soul Train Awards in ’93 bailed on her at the last minute and Pac stepped in and held her down:
This guy I was suppose to go with to the Music Awards bailed out on me at the last minute. Pac called up to say hi and to ask if I had extra tickets. And I was like, ‘This motherf**king motherf**ker fucking f**k!’ He was like, ‘F**k this motherf**ker. Let me go up in there with you. Come on.’ He said, ‘Let’s go together. And, let’s hold hands and let that motherf**ker see you on the screen. F**k him. Watch how crazy I am.’
Well isn’t that something out of Cinderella or what? And on a sidenote, Pac was also very good friends with Jasmine Guy, whom he met through her “Different World” co-star, Jada Pinkett.
Tony Danza & Tupac
But hold up, Jada and Rosie weren’t alone, as Pac, with his vibrant personality, impressed most people he met and came in contact with. While Tony Danza of “Who’s The Boss” fame and Pac were already established in their respective industries, I just had to add them to this list. Anywho, they became pen pals you could say during the time that the rapper was serving time for that rape charge back in the day. Danza was so moved by “Dear Mama,” and knowing that Pac was in prison, he told XXL that he decided to reach out to him and send him a letter saying how he appreciated his work. Yes, Tony Danza loved Pac’s form of gangsta rap. They talked about the responsibility that comes with power, and according to the video from the set of “California,” Pac didn’t have nothin’ but love for Danza for reaching out.
President Obama & Hill Harper
You never know who is living under a rock, right? Well, if that person is you, you should probably know that handsome actor, Hill Harper, and President Obama don’t shoot hoops together just because they’re both good at it, but moreso because they’re homies from Harvard. They actually met on the basketball court and became good friends while both there trying to hustle through law school. To this day, we know that they’re still close, as Harper has campaigned for both of President Obama’s presidential campaigns, and he still lets the POTUS whoop up on him on the basketball court every now and then.
