Every rapper’s favorite artist and Neo-expressionist painter/graffiti artist was all the rage in the ’80s, so much so that he attracted a wide array of very interesting friends. A slew of New Yorkers trying to make it in their respective artistic lanes flocked to Basquiat (aside from the very established Andy Warhol), and the Material Girl was one of them. They kicked it and got friendly (and drunk) at local bars, and from time to time, yes, they even had sex with one another. But the two never went past more than friends–with benefits. More than 20 years later, the singer is one of the lucky few who owns and collects the iconic artwork of her former friend.
