Nowadays, celebrities like Chris Brown and Rihanna make headlines not so much for their musical or acting endeavors, but very much for their relationship and marriage drama. We read about it in magazines, we follow it on Twitter and we watch it on TV with fascination. But though the scandalous details of celebrity couple ups and downs may constantly bombard our senses in all forms of media, relationships like Chris and Rihanna’s are nothing new.  Hollywood has been a hotbed of impassioned, and sometimes ridiculous, scandal for decades. To prove it, here are fifteen celebrity couples whose relationships were characterized by craziness – to us anyway.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s 14-year marriage was drug-fueled dysfunction to the tune of scandal, arrests, probation violations and court appearances. Their relationship was often compared to Ike and Tina Turner’s own tumultuous 14-year marriage –- an observation that Houston and Brown never appreciated. But although the couple sought to dispel negative rumors, their self-endorsed reality TV show, Being Bobby Brown, seemed to do everything but. The show provided the world an inside look into Whitney and Bobby’s marital train-wreck – focusing particularly on their outrageous drama and bizarre behavior. Houston and Brown’s marriage eventually dissolved, yet the memory of their rocky relationship continues to brand them one of Hollywood’s most controversial couples.

Ike and Tina Turner

Despite undeniable onstage chemistry, Ike and Tina Turner’s off-stage relationship was a violent catastrophe incited by Ike’s cocaine addiction. In Tina’s 1987 autobiography, I, Tina, she detailed the horrors of her marriage, including her suffering a broken nose from abuse, and fighting Ike back for the first time in the back of a limo in Las Vegas. The duo eventually divorced – Tina forging a successful solo music career, and Ike debilitated by his drug-addiction.

Chris Brown and Rihanna

Chris Brown and Rihanna are one of the most talked about couples in Hollywood – and have been for a while now. Their young love first ignited in 2008, but seemed to extinguish after a violent late-night altercation resulted in a battered and bruised Rihanna – it clearly had not. Months later, rumors swirled that the two were still seeing each other despite restraining orders, legal restrictions and all good sense. Since then, their never-ending relationship has been tested by Brown dating model Karrueche Tran, twitter wars, and constant public scrutiny. Regardless, the couple lives on, and off, as sometimes friends and other times more, but always in love –as they perceive it.

Mary J. Blige and K-Ci

Well before Mary J. Blige declared No More Drama the title of her album and philosophy of her life, the R&B songstress dated Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey, of the 90’s group Jodeci, for six years. There was fighting, abuse and jealousy, amidst Blige’s own private battles with drug-addiction, alcoholism and depression. An appearance on British TV show, The Word, would result in heartbreak for Blige, after she proudly declared her engagement to K-Ci, not knowing that just one week prior he’d dismissed their engagement as rumor – on the very same show. The couple split in 1997.

Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil

Deceased singer, Amy Winehouse, and her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, are infamous for their tumultuous four-year relationship: a period marked not only by an excessive number of make ups and break ups, but also by substance abuse, assault charges, self-mutilation, and rehab stays. More drama than not, the pair’s unhealthy relationship is considered by many to be the cause of Winehouse’s 2011 death.

Deion and Pilar Sanders

Earlier this year, Deion and Pilar Sanders’ marriage descended into scandal after their messy divorce proceedings induced a string of fights and allegations. In February, Pilar got into a hair-pulling, knife-brandishing fight with Deion’s aunt, Laura Jones; and in April, Pilar and a friend jumped Deion, resulting in misdemeanor assault charges for all involved, as well as arrest and overnight imprisonment for Pilar. As if that wasn’t enough, Pilar filed a $200 million lawsuit against Deion and his daughter, Deiondra, claiming the two had attacked her for years with “emotional weapons.” The couple has since gone their separate ways nonviolently.

Eminem and Kim Mathers

Eminem and Kim Mathers’ relationship has long been complicated by substance abuse and ignited by obsession. The two have married and divorced twice over a period of time in which Eminem was arrested for assault and Kim filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Eminem after attempting suicide. The couple’s complex relationship issues have often been the inspiration for many of Eminem’s most controversial lyrics.

Mike Tyson and Robin Givens

In just one year, boxer Mike Tyson’s marriage to TV star Robin Givens crumbled under the weight of miscarriage, spousal abuse and the need for a prenuptial agreement. Givens maintained that Mike’s violent abuse was painful to endure and difficult to overcome, while Tyson proclaimed that Givens had used him for his money. In the end, the couple split, but not before Givens earned the unofficial title of “most hated woman in America.”

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry

Though initially shocked by Halle Berry’s choice of baby daddy – French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry — the greater shock, for most of us, remains how bad the state of their relationship, post-breakup, has become. There have been bitter custody battles; racist accusations; requests by Berry to move daughter, Nahla, to France and away from her father; and most recently, a Thanksgiving day brawl between Aubry and Halle’s current boyfriend, Olivier Martinez, that resulted in Aubry’s simultaneous arrest and hospitalization.

Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson

Much of Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson’s relationship drama played out on Basketball Wives for the entertainment of millions. But although Johnson’s blatant cheating and Lozada’s desperate nonchalance may have been reality TV gold to some, it was certainly drama-fueled disaster to others. Nevertheless, the couple married, but divorced just forty-one days later following a nasty late-night head-butting incident and domestic battery charges. The couple lost their upcoming reality TV show and Chad was cut from the Miami Dolphins.

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline

The two-year marriage between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline produced two boys and a lot of drama. The couple met while Federline’s ex-girlfriend, Shar Jackson, was seven months pregnant with his second child. After just five months of dating and in spite of Federline’s new baby, Spears and Federline tied the knot – but marital bliss was not forthcoming. The two divorced, and Federline revealed that Spears suffered from post-partum depression – the very same that resulted in her bald-headed paparazzi attack; while Spears admitted that she’d married Federline for the “wrong reasons.”

Usher and Tameka Foster

Usher and Tameka Foster’s relationship was drama-filled from the start when the public openly disapproved of Foster, labeling her a gold digger. Usher’s own mother, sharing this very same sentiment, vehemently refused to attend the couple’s wedding, sparking further rumor and controversy. Over the course of Usher and Foster’s two-year marriage, Usher admits to having felt disconnected from his wife, a feeling that no doubt resulted in their divorce – which is precisely when most of their relationship drama commenced. Bitter from break-up and eager for a win over the other, Usher and Foster began a vicious custody battle for their two sons. Mud was slung in court, while fists and spit were slung outside of it (allegedly by Foster at Usher and his girlfriend). Just one month after the sudden and unfortunate passing of Tameka’s 11-year old son, the judge controversially ruled in favor of Usher, granting him full custody of the couple’s boys.

Fantasia Barrino and Antwaun Cook

Since first being spotted with Antwaun Cook in 2010, Fantasia Barrino’s relationship with the then-married man has been nothing but drama. The couple had always denied having an adulterous affair, yet Antwaun’s wife, Paula, persisted in divorce court that her separation from Antwaun was not finalized before he and Fantasia became an item. Ultimately, the judge ruled in Antwaun and Fantasia’s favor, but not before Fantasia took the stand in Antwaun’s defense to deliver the shocking news of having aborted a baby around the time she attempted suicide. Since then, the couple has had a baby boy, but the two remain unmarried.

Dorothy Dandridge and Jack Denison

Dorothy Dandridge’s abbreviated Hollywood career was made more tragic by her turbulent marriage to restaurant-owner Jack Denison: an abusive man whose love for Dandridge never extended beyond her money. Denison’s compulsive gambling drained Dandridge financially, and their marriage ended after two years.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton may have been Hollywood royalty, but their scandalous love affair, two marriages and two divorces were nothing more than pure drama at its most basic. The two met in 1953 while both were still married to other people – Burton to his first wife and Taylor to her third husband. Their love would not grow hot until the 1961 Cleopatra film set they reunited on, and would not fizzle out for nearly two decades of joint movie roles, glamorous jet setting, excessive drinking, and disastrous fighting.
