Amber Riley opens up about the unfair beauty standards in Hollywood in a new MTV series, This Is How I Made It. It takes a closer look at how some of Tinseltown’s biggest and brightest made it to the top. But the Glee star admits her rise to fame was a bit rocky. In fact, she says she encountered a number of setbacks, including directors encouraging her to shed pounds. But Riley refused.

“Hollywood is a very hard place to be in,” said a tearful Riley. “It really is. Being the person I am you know, the size I am, being a woman, being a black woman, there’s not a lot of roles for us.” The actress turned down roles that didn’t fit who she was—including anything that contained negative images of plus size women.

Check out what Amber had to say about some of her harsh auditions at ESSENCE.

YEAH RIGHT! THEY LOVE BLACK WOMEN LIKE HER. IT’S THE REALLY ATTRACTIVE, INTIMIDATING ONES WHO HAVE A HARD TIME.

when they cast ‘overweight’ black women they tend to go with someone like gabourey sidibe- not someone like amber riley who is in good shape for a plus size woman and pretty too, seems like they prefer a ‘mammy’ type that you cant even see their eyes b/c of their faces being so fat.

    • DUMBBEACHPLEASE

WHAT THEY DONT WANNA SEE IS SANAAS, MEGANS, TEAIRRA MARIES, ESHTER BAXTERS, TAMIAS, TONI BRAXTONS, ETC. PEOPLE WHO WILL OUTSHINE THEM!

      • DUMBBEACHPLEASE

AND THE WHITE DUDES HATE ON THESE TYPES IF THEY DONT FACK THEM OR WHITE DUDES, WHICH IS WHY THE NIGHAS ARE STEALING ALL OF THEIR WOMEN. LOL @ HATERS!

Sooooo freegin true! I thought I was the only one who noticed this. The media is really SICK and I swear they have an agenda against black women. They hardly ever give our attractive black actresses a chance on the big screen alongside their beloved white actresses or actors.

exactly. all the black women in hollywood are the same “starlets” from the damn 90s. we don’t have any new black actresses under 30. all i can think of is keke palmer and lauren london. they don’t give no name black folks a chance. it takes like 10 or 20 years for us to be finally recognized (it took viola davis and morgan freeman that long) but yet they’ll put a random white chick from the streets with absolutely no acting experience as the STAR of a big budget movie and she becomes a steady working actress. black people work hard just to be a sidekick.

everyday there is a brand new young white actress blowing up the screens. there aren’t any young new black, hispanic, asian, samoan,or native american actors/actresses. ok for native americans they have taylor lautner but that’s it.

Okay I get it. It is difficult for an overweight Black actress. However, when they do cast, they prefer overweight, unattractive, or nonconventional black actresses so they won’t compete with the “beauty” of the white girls. So, in Hollywood right now, girls that look like her have more opportunities than girls that would look like a young Gabriel Union. Likewise, they made V. Davis gain weight for The Help when the truth is that most black maids were overworked, underfed, and frail, not fat like the whites portray it. Riley’s weight helped her get that job. If she was skinny, she’d be out of work.

i don’t know why you got thumbed down, it’s the truth

      agreed whole heartedly.

    • DUMBBEACHPLEASE

AMEN! I DIDN’T EVEN SEE YOUR POST BEFORE I POSTED. THEY WANT TO BRAINWASH THE WORLD INTO THINKING ATTRACTIVE COLORED WOMEN DONT EXIST.

      • chanela

it’s too late. people have already been brainwashed! i hear people of other races all the time say ” you’re so pretty for a black girl” actually i hear black men say ” you’re pretty for a dark skinned girl” and ” are you sure you’re not mixed? you’re too pretty to be fully black “. the damage is already done

No thanks
