Ronald Cotton & Jennifer Thompson

From Black Voices

“I Didn’t Do It” told the story of Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton. Thompson wrongly accused Cotton of raping her in 1984, though she didn’t do it on purpose. She was certain Cotton was her attacker — and convinced two juries he was.

Cotton was sentenced to life behind bars in North Carolina in both his trial and a retrial; in the latter trial, a second victim claimed he’d raped her as well. Ronald maintained his innocence throughout.

Now just imagine if the woman who accused him was Black….seriously doubt he would be so big as to befriend her. smh

sooner or later people are going to realize that forgiving is what lifts the burden of hatred off of your heart. when you walk around in life with this hatred it eats away at your mind and your spirit. You dont need to be spiritual or religious to understand this. Imagine waking up everyday, going thru your day and going to bed every night angry with feelings of revenge. It will sooner or later consume you. It will affect how you deal with others in life. To say that it wont you are just fooling yourself. I know this because i felt it. Had a friend who was murdered and i know who did it. He got locked up. But there were days when i saw his friends and family out and about in the town and my emotions would boil to the point that i wanted to kill them out of revenge. This went on for years until my mind said “its time to let go”. As soon as i did i felt the dark cloud lift.

      blah blah yaddah yaddah

I saw this the other night on TV. I think they did him wrong only giving him $10,000 for each of the 11 years he spent in prison with the guy who actually raped Jennifer. There is not enough money in the world that give a person back the life the wasted in prison for a crime they did not committ. This is a sad story and case. There were a couple of detectives that resigned over this, the disgust and guilt they endured after they found out they put Mr. Cotton away. He deserves more than 100k he was given. God bless him and his family.

You think they did him wrong for only giving him 110,000 dollars but then you go on to say that “there is not enough money in the world to give a person back the life the wasted in prison for a crime they did not committ.”

  • MIYO K.

What could possibly come of this friendship?

  • baddvixentype

i’d be huggin that ichtby with a bat. IJS

Got me cracking the hell up with that one!…lol

  • Meyaka

God exist in this’s n,because there is no way a racist lying skank would be even an associate of mine after putting me through the ringer like that 11 years???????? 11??????

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/V6O2EBOSDDIC3EESW3JS22OYWA Vic

Well , she is white though…. We were enslaved for centuries, had the foundation of our communities destroyed , but still have ” Get down with the swirl” propaganda articles put out and endorsed twice a week.

      • Meyaka

        I heard that

      • Kay

If you still hold a hatred in your heart for all the things that happens in the past, that you weren’t even alive for then all the things we fought for as a race were for nothing. The goal is to forgive but never forget and not let hate rule you.

        • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/V6O2EBOSDDIC3EESW3JS22OYWA Vic

It’s not in the past its still happening and happening globally. Also , I really don’t understand what hate has to do with anything . It’s a complete waste of time to ” hate” anyone. We are living in a system of white supremacy .

          • Kay

lol so I guess your the modern day Malcolm x?. Whatever your racial intolerance is letting me know this is a pointless discussion

        • get real

“Forgive but don’t forget”. See that’s our problem we wanna sing Kumbaya and play patty cake with everybody while they are putting ish together. Militia groups are getting stronger. The South is talking about seceding trying to start another Civil war. Racist websites are stronger then ever. This past election cycle every other day they were calling black folks everything except the child of god. To say the least. But us blacks gotta “forgive” and try to play cool with everybody even though they got their foot up our a**

          • IAJS

            say that twice

          • Yah

and don’t forget the intentional relegation of Black women to marginalization in the past several years. totally agree with you GetReal. black people always want to forgive and forget whites and other racists, but are quick to turn and hate each other.

      • get real

        Lol. I agree.

      • MIYO K.

You don’t want Black women to have dating options besides lousy Black men but you probably fall over yourself drooling at the sight of a non-Black woman.

        • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/V6O2EBOSDDIC3EESW3JS22OYWA Vic

lmfao that certainly isn’t true in the least – although this is what the media and white people tell you about me, so I’m not shocked or offended that you would assume so. I also didn’t say anything about black females strictly dating black males , however I do this any type non white person engaging in sexual contact with a white person is incorrect given the context of society. End racism first , then we can all get down in the bedroom. It’s obvious that there is a lot of propaganda being pushed on black people to date white people, especially to black women.

          • MIYO K.

The media and White people haven’t told me anything.

Racism will never end because it is taught and learned from one generation to the next.

Besides, if there is ‘propaganda’ telling Black women to date White men, what does it matter to you?

          • Yah

Propaganda for black women to date white people???? HA HA HAHAH HAAAAA! Umm gee, I think you have that completely reversed. Black men are being pushed head first to be with white and dayum-near-white only. Black men like you are not too bright.

    • MIYO K.

There is no ‘God’ in this. If there was, wouldn’t it have stopped the woman from being raped in the first place? And don’t say that ‘God gives us free will’.

      • Meyaka

Believe me I’m far from being a holly roller, but I had to go to Jesus with this because I can’t see how else he did it, a perfectly innocent man stripped of his rights and tossed away in jail, who knows what he went through in there?!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/V6O2EBOSDDIC3EESW3JS22OYWA Vic

Too bad this didn’t happen during lynchings …-_-

  • Candacey Doris

I wish falsely accusing someone was a crime.

    • MIYO K.

      It is.

      • Candacey Doris

It doesn’t seem like it! People accuse guys and get away with the whole “I wasn’t sure” excuse all the time. And there are a lot of cases that come to light when the girl did not want to tell her family/boyfriend/husband she was sleeping with someone and blamed the first guy (often black) she could think of. It may be illegal in theory, but not in practice. Think of the guy who accused elmo. I bet he’s not going to jail for ruining the puppeteers reputation.

    • Atl

      It is

If someone raped me, i would get more descriptive details about the person other than their skin color. IJS

    • MIYO K.

If you were raped, how would you have time to process the details of your rapist?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

Well she sure had. He was tall and black thats all the details she needs

        • MIYO K.

That doesn’t answer the question I posed to you.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

I would do my best to process the details. And even if I couldn’t process the details or get an accurate description of the person, i sure as heck wouldn’t put an innocent man in jail.

            • MIYO K.

So, you think that in the process of a woman being raped or sexually assaulted she has time to look over her attacker and learn what he looks like?

              • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

Not every case no for example it could be dark outside. Other cases yes, for example the attacker could be someone she knows. Etc.

                • MIYO K.

You must have never experienced a very traumatic event like a rape before.

                  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

So all the men who did actually rape women and got caught, brought to trial, found guilty, and thrown in jail, what would that prove exactly?

                    • MIYO K.

It proves that there was enough evidence for them to get convicted.

            • MLS2698

They were just starting to become familiar with DNA at that time; it was not used in these cases, so the victims word was golden. I’m sure lots more black men are innocent of crimes, and some law schools even have societies who look at the cases and pick up the ones who seem viable.

              • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

That is sad. Even if it was before DNA testing, how can they just throw a man in jail without proof? How did they connect him to the crime?

  • Trisha_B

To them, all black people look alike. She just knew a black man raped her, didn’t bother about the specifics. This man spent 11 years of his life in jail. He has a good heart to forgive her b/c i don’t think i would be able to.
