Kevin Clash doesn’t have to worry about how to get to Sesame Street for a while because the beloved voice of Elmo is involved in a major scandal right now. The 55-year-old who has been the voice of the popular red puppet since 1984 has been accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage boy and has subsequently been placed on a leave of absence.

According to a statement from Sesame’s Workshop:

In June of this year, Sesame Workshop received a communication from a then 23 year old man who alleged that he had a relationship beginning when he was 16 years old with Kevin Clash, a Sesame Workshop puppeteer who performs as Elmo.

We took the allegation very seriously and took immediate action. We met with the accuser twice and had repeated communications with him. We met with Kevin, who denied the accusation. We also conducted a thorough investigation and found the allegation of underage conduct to be unsubstantiated. Although this was a personal relationship unrelated to the workplace, our investigation did reveal that Kevin exercised poor judgment and violated company policy regarding internet usage and he was disciplined.

Kevin insists that the allegation of underage conduct is false and defamatory and he is taking actions to protect his reputation. We have granted him a leave of absence to do so.

Elmo is bigger than any one person and will continue to be an integral part of Sesame Street to engage, educate and inspire children around the world, as it has for 40 years.

This news is obviously a major blow to Clash’s legacy. He is, or perhaps was, approaching 30 years as the voice of Elmo and has won a number of awards for his work with Sesame Street,  including 10 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series. When TMZ asked the actor, who was previously married and is the father of one daughter, about the situation he told the site:

“I had a relationship with [the accuser].  It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to make it into something it was not.”

You do have to question the motive of this man coming forward wth this allegation seven years after their relationship supposedly began. This story definitely has the potential to be evidence a lover’s quarrel gone wrong. I definitely hope this story isn’t true.

  • Idk about this one. Why not take it to the police so they can do a investegation? Why not produce the evidence that the Workshop asked for? I’m waiting for a civil lawsuit to come out.

I meant ” the legal age of consent is 14?”

  • When this boy was 16 he was 48 & Disney & the world is OK with this bcs the statute of limitations is 14? Is that how this thing goes? smh

    • Do you mean that “the age of consent is 14?”

    • Nikki

Well, it depends on the state. Because the age of consent on Georgia is 16, but in California is 15, and in New York is 17. So technically, this is statutory rape.

  • When this boy was 16 he was 48. Oh I forgot this is 1. Disney 2. CA

  • Tishy

This sounds sketchy. Somebody sexually assaults you and when you finally report it seven years later you go to their employers and not the police?

  • Misswhite

Lol you wrong for that one

  • IllyPhilly

    Damn, damn, damn!!!

  • Candacey Doris

I’ll wait and see hat the evidence is. Let’s face it, people have been trying to cash in lately. This hurts all the people who have truly been hurt and puts suspicion on them. Let’s not make any snap judgements.

Are you specifically talking about the ritual sexual abuse claims in the 1980’s and 90’s like the McMartin preschool case? All of those claims were also unsubstantiated and turned out to be completely false.

    • That particular case was, but I’m sure there were others that weren’t.

    • Kitsy

No, I was not referring to the McMartin case, which I know was proven to be false. I am speaking of the multitude of reports in the news. I am an avid newspaper reader, news watcher etc. and there are regularly reports of adults who work with children either engaging in sexual activity with the children who they are in charge of or being found to be in possession of child pornography.

He admitted that he did have a relationship with the person, so he is not ashamed of that. Sounds like a young man scorned. Perhaps the young man was not ready to move on.

    • Miss K

This is the part that had me raising my eyebrows. I loved the Sundance award-winning documentary “Being Elmo” and I can’t believe Kevin would admit to having any “relationship” with an underage person! Sad day.

  • Dawnn

I think he is done. He may not have a job now. Hopefully he will learn from it and it is not true.

  • NSimonefan

I believe this young man’s story. I just wonder why he hasn’t went to the police and filed a police report against this man on the grounds of statutory rape? That way, the police will conduct an investigation to determine whether or not to press charges. I think that’s what he should have done BEFORE going to the Sesame Street Workshop.

    • SheBe

This is about that money. That’s why he didn’t go to the police. He’s bitter now that he’s single and Clash has moved on to tickle new b00ty.

  • Sydney Evans

Hope this is not true for my childhood and the way society views sesame street in the future

  • I don’t believe it. it sounds to me like this person just wants to hurt him, destroy his reputation, simply just to hurt him.

Clash has said “he waited until the boy was of legal age….,” the relationship was consensual…” Another poster said in CA that’s 16, so Clash had a relationship when he was 48 & the boy was 16. SMH

  • Native_Noir

Aw, say it aint so Elmo!!! I’m counting on my Tickle Me being worth something one of these days… 🙁

I remember, LONGGGGG time ago ( 80s), my mother used to say all of the characters of Sesame street were g-a-y. And then we hear about the puppeteer for Miss Piggy had died from AIDS. Now this………I seriously used to give my mother the side eye when she said things like that, but over the years everything she said came true!

      • MLS2698

Most of the puppeteers, not the characters. Ooops!
